i7 920...who is still enjoying its awesomeness

Thanks for the quick reply my 4gb of ddr2 ram need upgrading anywa after that it'll be my ageing amd5850 that'll get changed then nice crisp ultra settings of bf3.

If you can find a second hand setup, the i7 920 will give you the best bang for buck out there.

No idea what the value would be though.

I'm pretty much waiting it out for haswell-e or maybe ivy-e. I really want the up market socket of the 2011 or whatever it will be when they are released, as these ivy/sandy z77 ones look very mainstream.

Whilst i cant mention prices on here due to forum rules, i will say this though. £200.00 is a bit expensive for a bundle.

I bought mine Easter 2009. 4 years on and I see no real need to upgrade.

I was tempted 1 year ago when I went 680 sli. I didn't see the cards pushed in BF3 and most peeps said it was my CPU. I held off anyway.

Then the last set of drivers released a week ago mentioned SLI improvements for BF3. This has taken the average utilisation from 68% in game to around 79%. And in some cases up to 99% which I never really saw before.

When will I upgrade? I get a feeling I might not even bother with Haswell..I think this thing is gonna have to die before I drag it out of my HAF-X.
my 920 is still going strong too

Just had a look in my order history, doesnt seem that long ago since i bought those bits.

Current board, cpu and ram cost a lot less, even factoring in that i had 16gb in the spec in sig for a while.

You miss your 920 don't you setter? I bet there's not a day that goes by where you don't think 'if only'.

Lol, she gone and left me mate. Tbh though, they were/are cracking cpu's. Theese along with the q6600 will always be regarded as greats. I could go back to using the 930, but it's the hassle of transferring all the other kit between cases. Much simpler to just drop a 3770k into the build in sig, (costlier too though).

Bought mine in Feb 09. 6GB ram, custom cooler and a Velociraptor 300GB HD. Only thing i've added is a 1TB HD & a GTX 570.

Overlocked to 3.8ghz on the first day and it's stayed there ever since. Money well spent.

When do you think the likelihood of an upgrade will be required with current tech progression?

Still rocking my original 920 which has been running at 3.8-4.0 for most of the time.

Since getting a couple of Titans, I've seen that the biggest bottleneck with this set up is likely the lack of PCI Express 3.0 - something that'll be causing me to upgrade to Haswell or IB-E when they come out. My benchmark results compared with others running the more modern PCI-E 3.0 architectures indicate that that should get me an approximate 20% improvement to my average framerates with SLI Titans @ 5760 x 1200.

had my [email protected] for some benchmarking and while stable a had the feeling it was a bit close to the edge so knocked it back to 4.0 . had mine since November 09 and I am well chuffed . I thought my previous buy was a good buy ( e6600 ) bu this baby rocks

cheers

Better off holding onto that 920 for another year mate by the looks of it!

tbh get a i2500k and a mobo and memory for same price and it will be faster than a i7 920 and run cooler and use less power.

The 920 will still last a few years yet especially overclocked 3.8 - 4.2ghz, i2500k > yes it runs cooler, less power at stock and its about 1ghz faster DG. But when you start overclocking I2500K you lose your membership to green peace.

Will upgrade when its really worth while.:)

Hi, what is the error code you get when you get a BSOD, with a bit of luck we could solve this problem. If you don't now check > c:/windows/minidump, if l remember rightly and post it.

Ive already rebuilt - but thank you for the offer.

When going into the BIOS I was also getting "These settings may not be accurate" warnings so I reset everything back to default while I reinstalled everything.

Whilst i can agree that it will run cooler, use less power, it will be faster but only in single threaded apps. Plus you drop down to x8 pcie 2.0 with multi gpu setups. But cost alone will be the worst part. From a quick search of recent 2500k sales on members market, theese cpu's are still going for £100.00 +, then you need to factor in the cost of the board and ram. A 920, decent board and 6gb of ram can be had for roughly the same price as a 2500k alone.

pue if you have a 920 already then yes its still decent but if you were buying second hand there is no real point in buying one as for same price you came buy a faster cpu and more efficient and less power and heat.

so if you already have one stick with it for 1-2 years yet unless top end gaming or if you after a second hand bargin powerful cpu then get a i2500k.

2500k will be faster oc better for same price . its no brainier.

2500k start from 100 quid second hand you could get a mobo and 8 gb ram for 70-80 quid

i7 920 70-80
mobo 40-50
ram 20-30

not much difference 20 or 30 quid difference and the electric alone on the 920 will probably be that over a year lol.
