...do you speak out and oppose their views? If not, why not?

For example, there are cases of racism on these boards by certain members but there aren't many people speaking out against their views.
One might think that by not speaking out against racist views, you are agreeing with them. What do you think of this statement?

For those who do speak out, why do you do so? Are you just making it known that people oppose their views, or are you trying to change their views.

For those who do not speak out, why do you not? Do you do it because you have the choice to ignore things said online, i.e. turn a blind eye. Do you do it because arguing on the Internet/OCUK is futile as you are unlikely to change their opinion.

Interested to hear what your answers are. Thanks.

edit - I do not speak out because as people have said, it is futile and I am unlikely to change anyone's views on the Internet.
As one person believes this post is aimed just at racism, it is not. I listed racism as an example, but there are plenty more such as software piracy or the topic of how to treat criminals (putting them in prison vs merciless torture (made up to represent a division of views)). The point of this post was to find your opinions, rather than any sort of accusation.

I speak out against them, but really the "internet is serious business" comes to mind here. If you really want to argue about every single post, in the random threads you read you would be arguing all day.

Bottom line is, someone is always wrong or against your point of view. You can't argue against it all.

Pretty much sums it up. I'm happy to give an opinion on matters where I have one but I've got better things to do then spend time arguing over stuff, in cases where giving an opinion will lead to argument I often say nothing to save the aggro.

You'll also notice that those who voice their opinion on everything and then try to back it up are those with huge postcounts ;)

there's no point in responding to it, 90% of the controversial posts on here are done in the safety of a bedroom and are done to provoke reaction by people who wouldn't say boo to a goose out in the big wide world.

and no this wasn't posted to provoke reaction.

Hi there,

A lot of the time I really can't be bothered... sometimes I write a response, but just close the window because I can't be bothered with getting dragged into a "debate"... but then sometimes I bother responding. I guess I'm more motivated to respond when people are spouting rubbish based on ignorance ;).

Happens to me a lot too.

Arguing religion and politics is basically 95 percent of the time pointless, you don't half the time even get a reason for the person believing something (in other words a logical point of view of their argument) it's just that they are right. They have no facts, figures or anything else to back them up, other than "I am right, because I am".

I tend to dip in and out of the forum inbetween work, I often see things I don't agree with, but don't have time / can't be bothered to get involved in a long winded debate. I don't want to just oppose someones post then disappear and not respond to them.

It's a waste of time, you can't have a proper conversation when you can't see the other people's faces. Emotion on the face is an important part of communication.

Yawn, tbh. Despite the 'fact' that racism was 'just an example' it was clearly the centre of your entire post bar the opening line. Why didn't you just come out and say "ZOMG OcUK you're so racist?" and have done with it? I'd have had a bit more respect then.

As it happens, people can think and say what they like. It's the internets, most of them probably haven't even left school yet. Meh.

I'm tired of argueing. Many of the topics - software piracy, for example - are just excersises in dead horse flogging.

Why can't we all just get along and share the love :p

I don't really care too much about people's opinion on the internet so rarely get that involved with debates especially the ones about race issues as it's quite obvious that as well as having some members with extreme views this place also has a lot of members who have no idea what racism actually is and it's pointless arguing with people like that so I just let them wind themselves up:)
