If you disagree with someone's opinions on OCUK/Internet...

Do you do it because arguing on the Internet/OCUK is futile as you are unlikely to change their opinion.

Why do you feel the need to change someones opinion? Some sort of moral superiority?
People will inevitably have differing opinions, they are neither right or wrong, they are just opinions.
Always makes me chuckle on this forum the amount of people who try and scream and shout down anyone who's opinion differs frome theirs, hell i've probably been guilty of it too :D

Why don't YOU speak out? Instead of passing the blame onto other people.

You claim cases of racism, but give no examples....

I'm assuming that the post was directed at me. I don't see how I am passing blame onto anyone.

Perhaps I should include reasons as to why I do not speak out. I do not speak out because as people have said, it is futile and I am unlikely to change anyone's views on the Internet.

If you would like examples they can be found in the "Birmingham is a crap hole" thread on GD, and the migrants and muslim threads in SC.

I don't really care too much about people's opinion on the internet so rarely get that involved with debates especially the ones about race issues as it's quite obvious that as well as having some members with extreme views this place also has a lot of members who have no idea what racism actually is and it's pointless arguing with people like that so I just let them wind themselves up:)

I agree. It would be like talking to a brick wall with some members. Although you would most likely get more sense and intelligence from a brick wall.

Yawn, tbh. Despite the 'fact' that racism was 'just an example' it was clearly the centre of your entire post bar the opening line. Why didn't you just come out and say "ZOMG OcUK you're so racist?" and have done with it? I'd have had a bit more respect then.

As it happens, people can think and say what they like. It's the internets, most of them probably haven't even left school yet. Meh.

That is not the intended meaning of my post, no. If you would like two more examples: consider software piracy or the topic of how to treat criminals (putting them in prison vs merciless torture (made up to represent a division of views)).

...I ban them and remove the evidence.

That's cos you've got lazy old bean. :p

I only really tend to argue if something really gets my goat, someone just happens to rub me up the wrong way or I'm actually genuinely interested/involved in a topic.

Of course, I also have the fun little addition that I don't have much else to do at the moment! :p

But yeah, I'm here for the giggles and to live somewhat precariously through others. Arguments are just a normal part of the forum. I think back when I signed up I was arguing anyone and everything, but soon learnt to chill out as it's just the nature of the place. As a general rule, you always seem to find its the newer members who are more eager to jump down people's throats, whereas older members are probably more aware of eachother's posting style and therefore don't allow themselves to become so irrate over minor issues. :p

Heck, some of the best arguments I've had outside of university have been on these boards. That aside, I do enjoy jumping in the deep end at times as you're always bound to learn something about the topic, if not just how to argue! :D

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the forum is just another place to express them, I always try to be objective and pragmatic in my answers but if the subject is of a "taboo" nature it always best to leave to the admins.

I do not speak out because as people have said, it is futile and I am unlikely to change anyone's views on the Internet.

Your first post in this thread comes accross as a little hypocritical. Accusing other people of not speaking out as much as they should, rather than speak out yourself. And yes, I'm aware you didn't say that in so many words, but it certainly has that tone.

i think the there are a lot of homophobic posts on here, everything is ‘gay’ or you’re a shirtlifter if you drink this or eat that… I disagree with that but it’s never been enforced so for example there is no point disagreeing about that

as said previous i'm on here to enjoy myself, get a good discussion, gain some knowledge etc not to argue with somebody. There are better ways to spend my time.

However by arguing with someone are you not just handing them the soapbox to climb up on and advertise/propogate the views that you disagreed with in the first place? Possibly giving them the chance to bring others round to their opinion rather than just let it die without giving the reaction they crave. (talking about trolls here)

Because I don't care tbh, everyone prejudges or has one group or another they are not 100% on. Whether it be gingers, fat or black people. Why is one thought/feeling worse than any other.

Who am I to judge someone else prejudices when I hold some of my own. Yet to meet anyone that hasn't.

I feel pretty much as you do. I usually dip into GD and SC, i rarely post as the arguements are pointless most of the time. I had to post in the Birmingham thread as I was born and raised there, and have no problem with people the discussing the quality of the city (i left myself :P). But, when it comes down to ZOMG there are no white people there, it got my goat. Mainly because i went to a school that was maybe 50 - 50 white and other ethnic groups and i grew up without having a problem with other races. But meh, i regret posting now as ill probably get dragged into an argument with someone whos opnion is the complete opposite of mine.

Do you do it because you have the choice to ignore things said online, i.e. turn a blind eye. Do you do it because arguing on the Internet/OCUK is futile as you are unlikely to change their opinion.

When things turn serious, unless I care deeply about it, I don't want to spend the time researching and backing up my opinions, especially when most of the time (in serious conversations) you're arguing against people who won't change their mind - either because they've heard it before and have already formed their views, or because they don't want to hear what you have to say, and have formed their views anyway. The current discussions about BNP fall right into this category. For things I feel are less serious, flippant comments up to a point and bow out when it gets too serious for my liking.

It's different when someone is spreading misinformation which could influence someone to do something dangerous and is easily rectifiable with a couple of facts (eg if someone gave advice which could result in their car being unsafe). In this case I'll happily wade in - but that usually boils down to opinions, not facts.

I tend to get really emotionally involved in arguments and end up getting angry/upset or regret what I say, so I generally say nothing provocative. :p

Personality flaw I suppose.
