If you don't have Facebook you don't exist... virtually

I'm very tempted to ditch my FB account, only use it to keep in contact with a couple of mates in the US And Dubai whilst they're out of the country.

The most time I spend these days on FB is for work carrying out investigations into staff conduct when people post inappropriate info or use it during working hours

I'm not on Facebook either, it does make it harder to communicate with friends but that's a penalty I'm willing to accept.

So many strong views on such a non-issue...

Oh yes, this is another phrase that's getting used a lot at the moment. If something is not relevant to you personally, it's a "non issue". But this is extremely relevant to all internet users, since even if you don't use the site, you will know many people who do.

If I thought like you people did I'd be so compliant with the world it's scary.

This is a very telling sentence.

In general most people should be complying with 'the world' because that is how a society functions. If we all did what we wanted, then we'd live in chaos.

The only time you should not be complying is when you believe there is an injustice in doing so. And even then, you should have exhausted all attempts to resolve the issue through the normal methods.

Perhaps you think there is something edgy or cool in rebelling against society?

I don't think your concerns are relevant to the majority, full stop. I don't spend much time thinking about Facebook since I disabled it.

Does it though? In what way? Doesn't everyone you know have a phone number/Skype/email?

My core friends do but not the others that I wanted to keep in touch with now and then. Since I closed my account a few years ago I've lost all contact with them. I suppose that was an error on my part - I could have handed out alternative contact details before I closed my account - oh well.

It's a non-issue because there are lot of far more important things going on in the world to be riled up about than a poxy website.

I guess the a la mode phrase would be 'first world problems.'

Nah, all it means is that you didn't care that much about them anyway. Nothing of value was lost. Now you can spend time on the people you really care about.

Who is actually going to look through 10000s images of someone else ?

What is the point of uploading all the photos?

I understand using it for the chat and communication but why upload all the photos?

I had a big falling out with my best mate over this recently.
We went on holiday to India together and I took loads of pictures and shared them in our Dropbox folder.
He then uploaded them all to Facebook, even pictures of my family who live out there, I asked him to take them down but he kept refusing.
He has no real significant reason of not having them there, IMO he's done it so he 'looks' cool to others but in reality no one cares.

I've pretty much given up using Facebook, it gives you a sense of something and you think you'll miss it when it's gone, but you don't.
I still have the account and have people message me occasionally, but I don't actually go on the site very often. Maybe once every 3-4 days.
A lot of people seem to spend a lot of time looking at other peoples profiles and just spending endless hours on it. That is the thing that really weirds me out, in that how can you spend a life on a website?!

Interesting choice for words. This 'poxy website' isn't some Angelfire blog, it happens to be one of the top earning websites on the planet.

Yeah. I remember a lot of people invested in 'top earning websites' some years back. Heck, I remember a lot of people did it with Facebook's IPO and got burned. What have their earnings got to do with anything?

Not having facebook is like not having a phone number or an email address.

IMO Facebook is just 50% a way for shallow people to attempt to cram their social lives down each other's throats in order to get validation or attention from each other, and 50% advertising.

Plus it seems to be almost mandatory to have a picture of you in New York with yellow cabs going about.

I signed up years ago but never used it - Then they made you have facebook email address so never used it since except for going in and changing my password to a very strong one - So after reading this post I tried logging in and it didn't recognise the email address I have - So please tell me I have been wiped off.

If any company site I visit say's follow us on facebook that's it no chance.

Dave
