If you don't have Facebook you don't exist... virtually

I like fb. It makes it easier to keep in contact with mates, also quite an easy way of arranging events with mates that live further away harder to reach etc..

This is very true, there's a group of us that go away every year and the debate over which house/cottage to rent usually takes most of the year to get agreed, so a private group for that is very handy.

Can't really see any other point to it yet though.

It wasn't as bad as this in 2006. Perhaps because I never went onto such sites and very little from the internet made it to your TV. If you wanted to know of said things you had to go searching.

I wish it were 2006, the internet was far more exciting. And far less annoying.

Posting status updates so people can like it is just attention-whoring.

1000x this

I've had a facebook for ages and don't really engage with it... I feel distinctly like I don't "get it" and only really keep it because I have a lot of old school-friends on there and it's (sometimes) nice to see where their lives have taken them...

But I think why I don't get it is because 99% of all occurrences and events in my life I feel like aren't worth broadcasting to everyone I have on there... It's not that my life isn't interesting (keep telling myself that :p) but why would anybody be even slightly interested to hear every detail? Maybe if I get married or have kids or move to a new house I might put up a few photos for family + friends to see (with privacy options set accordingly) but even then I might not bother

There are a few people in particular I have on facebook who are class A socio-paths... they can't even just post a picture of something kind of awesome and let the picture do the talking, it has to be accompanied by a caption saying something like "Work just gave me this flashy Merc to drive, ain't nothin :o"... and the same people do that annoying thing of putting up some willy-waving photo, wait a few weeks while all the sheeple "like" it... and then tag themselves in it, popping it back to the top of the news-wall thing for everyone to see all over again... Or post a status and then comment on it themselves a week later... RAAAH just **** off already!

Actually it's brilliant.

r/facepalm wouldn't provide so many laughs if the good people of FB suddenly stopped what they do best.

Why have you got them on facebook?
Why do you feel you have to broadcast your life on fb?
How about use it how you want, rather than thinking you have to copy other people.

Or if you don't want. It don't use it, but don't complain about stuff that is under your own control.

The other day someone I know posted a picture of the food they were having with their family. I was just visualing it, "hold on guys... I have to take a photo of this... now uploading it to FB... with a comment..." And then he carries on checking for likes and comments throughout the meal. How about spending the time properly with the people who are there?

This is why I have always said that fb is a fad. Like everything else before it. It has its peak and then slowly starts to get worse and worse. The owners will try and add things every so often or change the rules to add more life back in to the place. But if its peaked its only a matter of time.

Its the same for everything, even clubs or pubs. Everything has its day, sure it may not close, but that point in time where it peaked may never be recreated again.

Assuming this refers to me...

I've got them because prior to becoming irritating attention seekers they did use to be good friends of mine from college, and do occasionally post things I am interested to hear about... It's just a shame it's peppered in-between so much annoying rubbish

I guess you can't help but slightly feel that if you have facebook and aren't ever bothering to post anything much then you're not entirely using it right...

I take your point though - it's not something I spend hours dwelling on but it just seemed like this thread was inviting some discussion and sharing of experiences with it - and my experience is that I have things to complain about :D

It must have hit a nerve then since div0 is trying to spin it.

You've lost me....

My point was merely that one of the most common forms of 'attention seeking' I see (both on here and on Facebook) is people repeatedly going on and on about how they're in the process of deleting their Facebook account.

Especially since someone has a number in their username.

Again, not sure what your point is.

:D

Why?
Im using it entirely right, a tool that suits me and is better than alternatives. Just because others are using it differently, doesn't mean you have to copy them.
Its indispensable for organising stuff. I use it as a news feed, liking f1, nasa, robo3d, local chiili farm and many other such things, i get all the science, gadget, local news I need without browsing 600websites and only get the stuff I want.
Uploading photos so parents can have a look (not that I've allowed them access to everything) and photos are as much for me as anyone else. Nice place to keep them all and displays them in a nice tidy way with ability to tag info on them.

Likes are required to make the meal delicious! Virtual kudos is the spice of every meal..

:(

I love FaceBook, it's full of internet hardmen who get their knickers in a twist when you goad them.

Deleted FB in 2008, don't miss that place at all, full of Internet Warriors and stalkers lol

You could just have unfriended all the "internet warriors" and "stalkers" and used it to keep in touch with your real friends instead. Just sayin.

Another important point is that people act differently on FB to how they do in real life. There was one guy I met at a gig who was really cool bloke, always had fun with him. But he acts like a ****** on FB so I removed him.

Well that's sort of how I use it as well if you read the above (for the photos at least - I just use RSS for news feeds to save trawling websites), and I've no intention of starting to post irritating boastful pics and statuses, but it still feels like the entire site is setup and centered around supporting exactly that - don't you think?

As someone who has always been against fb, i have always found the reaction from users of it, when i criticize the site, a bit out of the ordinary. Its not as bad as it used to be. But some people defend FB more than they would other sites for some reason. Some people get quite worked up when it is criticized.

In the past (not specifically here but in general) if i said its a rubbish site. People would attack me saying that its crap for me because i have no friends etc. Or they get all worked up and defend it, by giving me a lecture on how it works for them. Its like they feel like they have to defend their use of it, when people criticize it.

If you like it then why do you care if other people don't?
