If You Had...

I'm with you; I would much rather spend £12k on 4 year old Golf R32 than a 10 year old M3 with 100k miles.

Whilst I fundamentally agree that there isn't much wrong with a hot hatch at this money I do love how you say random things to make a point :p. 12k is not 2002 M3 with 100k money, not even close. I don't think an m3 is the right choice here but it would be both newer and lower mileage than 10 years and 100k.

Not to mention that on the last page i posted a nice looking 2004 M3 with 69k miles for £10k...

Insurance is utterly biblical on these, for some reason. Twice the price of an E46 M3! Plus i'm an Evo man. ;)

Then get a Evo. I only linked the Subaru because of your need for a hatchback. Do not waste 12k on some FWD hatchback that goes in straight line when you press the loud pedal in a corner.

Scirocco R or Focus ST would be my choice.

Scirocco R for £14K? Where?

Evos come with Evo running costs. I think i'd rather take my chances with an M3! :p

As an aside, I took out a Mountune'd Focus ST today and it's a much better car than the stock one. Big wafts of torque from 2.5K all the way up to the redline. A very decent car.

Only problem is the one I specifically drove. I know it's well specced, low miles, and quite new, but I can't bring myself to pay what they're asking for it (although bear in mind the upgrades to it are probably £2000 alone).

Since you seem to be keen on the Focus, a mint and modded Mk 1 RS would be within budget?. Or if the budget could stretch a couple of £K upwards a Mk 2?.

I have the same budget and looked at all the same options. Changed my mind and looked at A4 Avant's and bigger cars. And have now settled on my mates 2002 Octavia vrs for 2 grand :)

Deposit on a house has to come first. I will get a decent car when I have somewhere to park it, not a street in Tottenham

It doesnt matter what it says, you can quite clearly see from the photographs and the price that it isn't a Scirroco R, it's a 1.4 TSI :p

This backs up my previous point - it's the car you want, looks like a good example and is on budget, seems reasonably priced for what it is. But you didn't want to part with the cash..
