If you like House, and you like Dexter...

CSI is complete bubblegum compared to The Wire, two complete different kettle of fish, as in CSI is atrocious and The Wire Isn't

...then you should watch The Mentalist. It strikes me as a cross between the two and it's a good watch.

The Mentalist is exactly like Dr House. Both are observant and clever when coming up with diagnosis/murder-theories.

I've been going through the Mentalist episodes during the past 2 weeks and have been impressed...and this coming from someone who absolutely hates murder/cop shows, like CSI, etc.

Yes, the link between House and The Mentalist is obvious. Both characters undermine their superiors and do their best to upset people but both are extremely clever in their chosen fields.

Admitedly the link between The Menalist and Dexter is a little weaker. It's about two characters who are bother trapped in their own worlds with nobody around them being able to relate to them.

That may be true, but as much as I love House, it seems to have become a bit formulaic, as in 'you are all idiots' followed by thinking montage, and then 'I was right all along'. The problem is that Gregory House's character is so strong it doesn't seem to bother me.

I'd also recommend Breaking Bad which is excellent, although it is in no way related to the aforementioned shows.

I agree with breaking bad, but you have to watch the first season.

Who'd of though, Malcolm in the middles dad could be such a great actor, even though he was in Seinfeld. Surely the big screen will be calling for Bryan Cranston soon enough.

Plus, its about Meth. Everyones a winner

The mentalist is ok, but its no house :P House is the best show in production imho. i have seen an ep of Dexter, it was alright might spend the time watching it at some point. but i dont really think its a croos between the 2 of the like some crazy love child. its an OK show i did like the first ep of the mentalist but would go for house over it any day. though i can see how they are similar, Hugh is a much better actor and plays the part better, i think the writting of House is much better as i am much more captivated. I was interested what had happened to house and his leg, but with the mentalist i wasnt so bothered about what had hapened to his family and so on. its just doesn't demand the same amount of attension, does not carry the same comedy or wit, House is an american show thats been written well, where as i feel that the mentalist is an american show that is truely american :P

and thats the long and short of my opinions!

i see where you are coming from ish but have you seen the latest ep? came out on the 6th of april i think in the states? i didnt expect that lol if you can tell me you did in a formulaic way then well done! lol

The Wire worth a shout then? I mean, I'll probably get it on boxset in the future if it is as I'd prefer to watch things in bulk rather than waiting between episodes or seasons!

I would say the wire must be watched in bulk or not at all, it's not something you can randomly jump into. Treat each series as one long film, to really appreciate it. It takes a bit of effort to get into, but when you get hooked you'll be very very glad you gave it the time.

As said above, im making my way through the wire just now. Its good, there are some truely amazing scenes and then some really pointless boring scenes but overall its really good, worth the watch. A friend recommended breaking bad, so might give it a watch. I havent heard anyone really talk about the Mentalist though

yup, house has gotten incredibly formulaic, but the problem isn't that its the other characters and the storylines that aren't the patient. They constantly have a go at house and accuse him of making mistakes but all the mistakes made by "being him" have been in episodes where they bet him to go off pain pills for a week, or they won't perscribe him any pain pills or x,y,z. When left to be who he is, which makes him as happy as can be, saves lives and gives everyone ajob to do they constantly create drama out of nothing. THis would be fine if the drama was interesting but invariably its not.

House isn't actually mean, just sarcastic, usually funny, doesn't care about people he's never met before in patients and thats it. WHile the other doctors pretend the patients are life long friends while being actually mean to house and each other. Foreman is maybe the character i've hated most in any show ever, he's killed people, been mean to many people, done the whole having a go at every black person because he was from the streets aswell crap. he actually treats people like crap and most importantly has been wrong in every show since its inception, he's a completely unlikeable character. He's made more mistakes than anyone yet constantly got put "in charge" only to screw up again.

Having him bang the hot chick was the last straw :(

The side stuff to the patient when not trying to screw house up then telling him he's screwed, is often very funny, witty well writen stuff and the show needs more of it.

THe PI episodes were fantastic, funny, well writen and just flat out great, need him back, though heard there might be a PI spin off with that guy in which has potential.

As for the Mentalist, he doesn't normally know whose guilty at the start but has a big idea almost always halfway in, but I have no problem with that, the story goes on until he catches or can prove that persons guilt.

Complaining about who he thinks is guilty, i mean, pretty much everyone has an idea between 2/3 people from the beginning, whats the problem with that, knowing who it is is easy, proving it is hard.

Things like CSI do my head in for one reason, the imposibility. Anything that happens in house/mentalist, the wire can happen. CSI can not, i was flicking through a while ago and saw a bit where a normal security camera outside a store, crappy quality they took the picture, zoomed in 100 times and got a picture off the killer on a corneal reflection. Its full of that crap, utterly impossible nonsensical crap that sounds good to people who know nothing about technology and absurd to everyone else. Dreadful show, all of them.
