If your a gamer, what's the point in upgrading to Sandy Bridge?

I'd love a new CPU/Mobo/RAM but price is the main thing holding me back at the moment. I can still handle most games out there at decent settings, and the thing holding most of them back is the GPU, so that's what I'll be upgrading when I feel that my gaming performance isn't up to scratch.

My system will just not OC any more so its back at stock. Some of the new games run slow and choppy like Civ5. So ill be upgrading for a number of reasons.

Also i just upgraded to a 6970 and because of the rubbish SATA placement on my board, I can only use 4 our of 6 ports and I have 5 devices so i am currently rolling with no CD drive.

Also looking to move to mATX, I need to reclaim some space. I hope asus do a rampage gene board.

My gf's PC gets bogged down with flash games and iplayer so she can have this one.

I'm upgrading as my current cpu is a first generation core2duo e6400 which is 4 years old!!
2600k i7, asus p8p67 deluxe, 8gb ddr3 2000mhz, 460gtx sli and raid 0 of 2x SSD Vertex 2E's for me. Ordering on 9th Jan!! =D

sure you cant do it today or tomorrow unless you want a 2.5% increase in price

Same upgrade path here but from an e6300 :P

I'll be waiting a week or two after reviews of mobos and overclocking of 2500k and 2600k come in.

Civ5 is actually one of the few games that will benefit from the really high end processors. It pushes my cpu to around 85-90% usage between turns. A top of the range processor will probably speed up the time between turns when you're playing huge maps in the later stages of the game.

It wasn't very well optimised when it first came out, but the few patches that have been released dramatically increased CPU usage (and decreased time between turns.) The kind of work civ produces is a lot easier to divide across multiple threads than other genres of game, so I wouldn't be surprised if it uses 6 or more cores with HT enabled cpu's.

I'm upgrading from an AMD 3200 xp to a sandybridge!! Not really an upgrade more like a total new build ;)

well yeah, technically a new build!! Swapping out the PSU too. Considering whether to keep the Lian Li or get a new case, though I can't see anything that takes my fancy...

if it does, it will be negated by the vat increase anyway i guess

I HATE VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :@

+1 to VAT hater :(
would go for i7 2600k instead if VAT is not rising

Good grief, could you lot get a bit of perspective!?

The increase in VAT equates to a whole 2.13% increase in the total price of goods, or roughly a tenner on a £500 item.

When it comes to computer hardware, the general downward trend in prices will absorb that increase in a matter of weeks!
