I'm looking to buy an iMac at the end of this month, they look all shiney and impressive but just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on them!

They will help me out work wise with my new job but I also fancy a change, I'm going for 2nd model of the 20" series to get me going :)

With the mac expo around the corner I was wondering whether it would be better to wait the extra couple of weeks if they announce a better spec iMac!

Although its unlikely, WAIT till tomorrow. If no spec-bump, buy away.

For the sake of 24 hours its not worth the risk of a spec bump/price drop however small it may be.

If/When you get one, let me know how you get on- I'm saving for an iMac also and would be interested to hear your thoughts- Big Bernard too :)

Would it be your first Mac?

From my research, people are complaining about the screens. The 20" isn't as good as the 24" and people are seeing colour variation from top to bottom like a gradient which is bad for design work as at the top the whites are white but at the bottom the whites are slightly yellow (dirty white).

Others are also complaining about headaches and it's put down to the glossy screens and brightness levels (they are apparently very bright).

I would really like one but as I suffer from headaches at the computer I'm hesitating slightly. I need to get to my nearest Apple shop - Bordeaux - and see them for myself.

I was looking at the imac, but instead opted for a macbook...

The imacs are fantastic and I can wholeheartedly say that if I'd had a little bit more money to spec it up!

I think I made the best choice - going for a top macbook and putting more memory in it to get to grips with all things mac.

I'm really liking mac os x and I think that is the start of a long and happy relationship!

I've had quite a few Macs over the years and dabbled occasionally with them. I used to think they were good but I'd get a bit bored with them and end up back on the PC.

This time I seem to be enjoying it more and am really impressed with 10.5. There are loads of little things that all add up to make it really enjoyable to use. I stuck 4Gb of ram in from day one and the performance is excellent. It just doesn't seem to bog down at all.

This iMac is VERY bright. I have the brightness setting at its lowest and have calibrated the screen purposefully darker and I'm happy with it now. No headaches or anything. The glossy screen doesn't bother me at all. The iMac is very very quiet, it just whirrs along smoothly.

It's nice having to plug just one thing in instead of computer + monitor + speakers.

All in all, I'm delighted with this iMac :)

Incidentally, mine is a refurb 24" from the Apple store. It cost nearly the same as the 20" model you are looking at and looked brand new when I got it.

Thanks for the info- that's all useful to know. I was gonna ask about refurb's nearer my purchase too- cheers, mate :)

Completely forgot about refurbs! I'm relatively new to the mac scene (just over 2 months) but I could have saved a fair bit of money on a used mac - especially as usually theyre just cancelled orders etc..

Worth looking into imo!

Definitley worth looking into. Usually you get around £100-£200 off, depending on what Mac it is.

They are mint condition, just coming in a standard brown box instead of the Apple ones.

Hi, i have a 20" 2.4ghz iMac and it does a grand job it has 4gb or memory and is used on a daily basis for pretty much everything, its main use is for photogpahy and when it first arrived the colour profiles where terrible all far too bright and the Mac standard gamma is 1.8. But once i had got it calibrated i have had no problems i now have profiles for seperate gamma's and matching to my plotter.
