iMac

although the 1TB HDD upgrade from apple is £191.. is that a reasonable price?

edit: nevermind.. actually, i was looking at the top end 24" model. that's why the upgrades we're a bit cheaper

im going for the lower 24" model (with 2.8 extreme edition upgrade for £150). do you advice to get everytihing on stock and buy upgrades from ocuk?

I would buy the RAM from OcUK as that is user replaceable, but I don't think the HDD is an you would have a hard time replacing it.

I would wait for someone to confirm that though, not 100%.

That's what I thought then, HDD isn't user replaceable and will void your warranty if you do it yourself, best stick with Apple for that.

RAM is user replaceable though, so you'll be alright with that.

If replacing the RAM on the new iMacs is anything like the G5 one I had a couple of years ago, it's so easy it's scary. Slide off the back and it's all there. Reminded me of upgrading a laptop tbh.

Well my iMac arrived yesterday and I must say I'm well impressed! I absolutely love it at the moment and can't see me getting bored! OSX is brilliant!

Only thing on my list now is to get 4GB of RAM in this baby (although it runs sweet enough as it is at the moment) :)

Cheers again for all the advice!

Here's some pics for you all to see :D

Oh we like pictures :D

24" iMac :D If you need any pictures of anything else let me know..

I was even amazed on how I didn't need to do anything to get my camera to work.. plugged it in and no install anything, just worked lol

I thought the same thing. And I believe that the only other update would be the new processor.

To be honest though I'm glad I've got this now and don't think I'll be worried if they release a new one by the end of the year. This piece of kit is very impressive and I am happy with my purchase! :)

Yeah, I did a fair amount of reading around the .Mac and was thinking about getting it.. so at the moment I'm using the 60 day trial before purchasing it. But even after a day of use I can see it has some significant advantages.

I guess it's just as well that by the time the trail runs out I'll have some more money lol

What like? Always been intrigued by it but couldn't fine anything I would use it for.

Yeah, it's pretty good.

Just a quick note, buy your year membership from eBay, this seller in particualr. £45 for the year is a steal. Bought mine from him, works perfectly.

Thanks for the heads up Justin! Will definitely consider it!

As for the advantages I believe every section of it I would use...

- The back to mac feature means I can then access it from work.
- iDisk : Always useful, your own personal FTP site
- Gallery and web hosting - love this feature as every web gallery I create is never as good as what I've created already

Just view the video's on there..

I appreciate it might not be useful for some people, but this is really useful for me :D

Apple is the best place, they cost the same everywhere.

Unless you want an older model then look on eBay.

Apple refurbs are pretty good too.

Refurbs are top..

However whilst they cost the same everywhere (even student discount?) because of Apple's Pricing policy. Other retailers are allowed to compete on the 'package'... John Lewis offers a 2 year insurance thing, others might throw in iWork or reduced cost Applecare.

I've just signed up to the .Mac trial to give it a go. I can't make IMAP work with mail thought. It set it all up itself, but if I send myself an email it doesn't show up on it's own, and when I manually retrieve it, it still shows even after I've deleted it via my Touch. It's just not behaving 'IMAP-like'. Gmail was working fine before.

Any ideas?

EDIT: It's just updated. Seems very slow. Good 5 mins.

EDIT AGAIN: Does .Mac not support IDLE ? ! ?
