What's the point of having the Oppo HA-2 and a Fiio DAP? I was under the impression that the HA-2, Chord Mojo and similar were for use with phones that don't have the capability to really get the most out of a good pair of earphones/headphones?

Couple of reasons.
1 - I found that playing music via the USB dac + trading + other stuff on the phone seems to really slow the phone down.

2 - I wasn't happy with the USB DAC setup the sound need equalization which the Fiio does a very good job of.

Surely the DAP on it's own should be enough to drive those earphones?

Unfortunately not... If you read my post of when I bought it I was much disappointed to the point that I was an inch away from sending the Fiio back

I'll still use it directly as a DAP but only whilst at the gym and not for serious listening

For the price of the Fiio X3ii and the Oppo HA-2 you could have got an Astell & Kern AK Jr, wouldn't that have been the better option?

Good point but I had already committed to the Fiio and the Oppo was second hand ;)

Thanks for the reply, I hope it didn't come across like I was being overly critical, I was curious more than anything. The HA-2 has received brilliant reviews and I've been pondering whether I should buy one to go with my Xperia Z3 phone or whether I should spend the extra and get something like the AK Jr.

How does it compare to the old one? And which old one did you have?

Err, think I had the 2013 one - not the one previous to the above but it still had the 4 preset modes.

In terms of sound I'm not sure there is a huge difference, they both are dolby headphone so not really expecting a jump - I wish there was a HD audio version tbh.. I have not had much of a play with the custom EQ and I suspect that is where I can make it sound better!

However it works, doesn't drop sound if you move it and no crackling when you move the volume so its much better than my old one!!!!

Quality shifter GSXR! I have the same. I had to wrap the metal rod in double sided velcro as the clunking was a bit noisy, adjustable tight/loose shifting on the side (with a screwdriver) is a nice touch, enjoy!

Once you have tried it you just can't go back and unlisten to how extraordinary it sounds...

it's like having a portable hifi in your pocket...it's staggering.

And this applies to virtually any DAC with quality earphones/headphones.
I've only recently got into this wonderful audio world and I'm knocked off my feet.
It's as though I'm listening to music properly for the first time and I want to share it with all my friends.
I've got a mate coming down tonight because I want him to listen to his favourite band Queen properly.

What's all this DAC about? digital to analog conversion but what does that mean?

This is the one thing I miss with old age - "Quality sound" I am partially deaf now and music does not sound the same.

When I had my HiFi you could sit there and close your eyes and place each instrument and vocalist - surrounded by sound and records were the best.

Quality turn table and clean records equalled no click's or clunks

I have a wifi set of headphones now for TV and wired set for sound on PC -it sounds better than speakers for me now.

I hate old age.
