Indian Grand Prix 2011, Buddh International Circuit - Race 17/19

Which is normal :)

Are you really watching this? as you would have seen the car was still with it's rear suspension up in the air and he was looking at it
and still waving a green flag.

Oh I forgot your a ferrari fan..I understand now ;)

The green flag was being waved after the incident meaning the track was now clear. Which is totally normal practice, nothing to do with who I support for goodness sake.

Can't recall anyone ever being given a 3 place penalty before. Have the FIA started making up new punishments as they see fit again?

d’Ambrosio had a 5 place penalty at one race for ignoring yellow flags although I can't remember which race.

They gave MS and Alonso a 2 second time penalty in Hungary 2006, it's hardly made up, if Lewis and Perez respected the rules of the track then nothing would happen to them, you can't let ignoring double yellows go unpunished.

2 yellow flags clearly visible, and a green light 100m down the road to indicate the end of the yellow flag zone.

Clearly, once again, the issue here has nothing to do with what happened, and everything to do with the terrible way it has been reported in the media. Even the audio over that clip says the green light was shown "alongside the yellow flags".

He failed to adhere to the rules regarding yellow flags. If anything, people should be glad he only got a 3 place penalty and not 5.

Which sets a precedent that the penalty for ignoring a yellow flag is a 5 place grid penalty. By suddenly giving out a 3 place penalty for the same thing they are suggesting that Lewis and Perez have somehow committed a lesser offence. You've either ignored a flag or you haven't, there is nothing in between so a 3 place penalty is nonsense.

To be fair, you can't really argue it. The rules are clear regarding yellow flags and LH ignored that in order to set a fast time - hence the punishment.

The official statement is that me made a mistake. Whether he did or he chose to ignore the warnings only he will know, but he's been reprimanded for it, fair and square, and took it on the chin.

It does mean he'll need a good qualifying position to save his race though.

I'm not arguing that he didn't ignore the flags. I've not actually seen it yet (currently watching the rerun). I'm arguing that the actual penalty is not consistant with previous rulings/penalties. A 3 place drop almost suggests that the stewards have thought "Yeah he ignored the flags but it wasn't too bad so lets not give him the full punishment"

You know, every time they issue a 3-place penalty someone says this....

For future reference:

Singapore '08, Heidfeld, for blocking Rubens.
China '08, Heidfeld again, for blocking DC.

And at least two more that I can't remember the players in.

Please, everyone - accuse the FIA of making up stuff as they go along, when they actually are making stuff up as they go along. ;)
