Insomnia Sufferers in here!

I'm usually out like a light when I go to bed but then up 3-4 times a night for a pee, and always wake up around 5am. Constantly knackered, but I put it down to decades of working nightshifts and odd hours. If I'm stressed at all then forget it.
It's certainly not helped by being on my chromebook just before bed though I think.

My sleeping the last few weeks has been god awful!

During working weeks my normal sleep habits is like this:

Sunday 0hrs sleep
Monday 0hrs sleep
Tues crap sleep
Wed - Thu sleep but only 8hrs max
Fri and Sat is when I will get 9-10hrs
Sun starts the cycle again

---

However currently I have been off for 3 weeks and my sleep is still crap.

Recently its Wed and Thu night where I cant sleep and the other days when I do its not deep sleep and I am tossing and turning and waking up a lot.

Cant figure out why...

My habits haven't changed at all compared to the times when I can go for months and months with no sleep issues at all.

Well Xmas and New year has absolutely knackered me up again!

11 at night and im so wired may actually go to a 24 hour gym...
What do you tend to do with the time when you can’t sleep?

Is it a case of being tired but not sleepy, and so not productive? Or do you make use of the time?

Must be frustrating - I’ve had it a couple of times recently. Go to bed tired, wake up 2 hours later and can’t get back to sleep, but I feel too tired to do anything.

How old are you? Had your prostate checked?

Do you have a partner and if so, do they say you snore badly?

I have sleep apnea which caused similar waking and constantly peeing problems, as well as falling asleep in the day without realising it was happening. I have a CPAP now which has made a world of difference.

I still have a lot of **** sleep but It's fixed one of the problems, at least I don't have to get up anymore!

After a couple of years with no issues, in the last few weeks my Insomnia has made a lovely return.

Initially thought it was due to the amount of tea/coffee that I've been drinking, but the last few days despite having nothing, last nights "sleep" was the worst yet.

Fortunately got in to the docs and after being given a surprise blood test, managed to get the usual bucket of options to see what works as know from previous rounds that some medications work and others dont, so a few nights of trial and error to see what ticks the right boxes.

Am also monitoring my circadian cycle which suggests it could be shifting again.

Anyone else suffer from insomnia and do you have any tips or tricks that help you?

I suffer a lot! Generally I sleep only around 3 or 4 hours a night and then catch up over the weekend where I seemingly sleep absolutely fine - Last night was a classic and I was there staring at the ceiling at 3:30am knowing I had to be up for work at 6. I have never been to a doctors or anything on it but suspect I probably should.

I do use the time fairly well though and tend to work on repairs and electronics projects that I have on but really that only ever covers up to around 2am after which I try desperately to sleep.

It depends on how im feeling. Last night I did a little excersise, then sat down and did some modeling / painting with some generic youtube videos playing in the background until I got relaxed / tried enough to give sleeping a try, which worked.

Other nights will just wrap myself up nice and warm and just put some music on or a movie and doze instead.

Other nights will be so wired that just crack on with gaming or work or similar.

It changes from night to night with no rhyme or rythem. Food, drink, routine, etc etc. The only certain way is if ive had a physically active day and am genuinely exhausted. But even then after a few hours good sleep my brain is awake and ready to go again, even if my body is sore as hell!

At the moment I seem to be shifted around 5 hours from normal, in that I naturally want to sleep around 2-3am and sleep through until 10-11am.

I have been coping with insomnia for years, near on 25 years....cant sleep at night but can easily (and do) nap during the day. I have also had the aching problem, primarily when tired. After years it turned out that I have a neck issue, which I had said to the docs many times but they concentrated on the symptoms of left side pain until I eventually met a physio that knew what she was talking about.

In short, in my case the following has helped (noting I am posting at 0100!!), get off the pain killers, get rid of any pillows on your bed, reduce alchohol intake (thats what has killed me during Xmas and put me awake again). As others have said, remove anything of distraction from bedroom like a TV but I also found audio books helped me drop off (although a couple of good ones kept me awake all night!) and dont go to the bedroom until you are ready to sleep - make the bedroom a sleep only area if you ahave that ability.

I also found power napping during the day helped as long as I kept it below 30 mins and no caffine after 1200.

Hope this helps someone, kinda works for me in part, insomnia is a lifestyle killer and not really understood by those who dont suffer from it (my Ex couldnt understand why I was awake and didnt/couldnt go to sleep!)

I feel your pain, many a night I have just lay there and watched the darkness turn onto light outside, then been knackered all day! I can manage about 4-5 hours, and as I have a meeting at 0800 and dogs and stuff to do I'll head to my pit in about 30 mins - I really do reccomend audio books, they seem to really help me drop off (which is wierd as when I am driving I use them to keep me awake??) - sometimes I am not sure if I am fully asleep as the next night I 'feel' that I have heard that bit already, but it does calm the mind..

Easier said than done, but my sleep therapist tells me you have to get out of bed if you wake up. Only go back to bed when you feel tired again.

I struggle relentlessly with this, I crash, but then wake up suddenly usually withing 2 hours, thoughts of work, general stress etc.

I've found streaming the ambient sleeping pill radio station helps sometimes, but it's far from a cure all.

I feel for you as I know how mad it can make me.

I'm suffering from jetlag at the moment but my hack is 300mcg melatonin and every time I wake up, get up and take another. I can get around 12 hours sleep using this method. The dosage on most melatonin supplements is too high and can give a hangover feeling.
