Installed 8GB, only shows 3.2GB!!!?

lol ok. I thought a ram disk would be considered as system ram but maybe only vice versa is true

I heard of a ps3 chip on a pci card also and that probably had its own ram also.

Just I wonder how graphic artists cope if they cant add massive amounts of ram, maybe its added to the graphic card but that would still have to fit in the allocation

Should be ok but it isn't as compatible as normal XP. Particularly drivers for peripherals. :(

If i were you i'd consider Vista 64. Works excellently with 8gb of ram. :)

gt

Heh this answers my question re. which OS to go for now (is there a significant difference between Home and Ultimate?). I understand extra RAM in some way stresses the processor. Would using 8gig with an stock speed E6600 be a silly thing to attempt?

Im currently using 6gb of ram on 2008server 32-bit. It detects all 6gb of ram :)
(still only 3.5gb is usable per program running).

Will be changing back to windows 7 soon tho, just needed to play with some hyper-v stuff.

id deffo sy windows 7 7057, im on it at home and its stable as a rock, only thing i havnt managed to get working is 4OD which doesnt recognise WMP12 :( so i cant watch skinns haa haa.

asides that its great :D

Is there anyway whatsoever to (legitimately) get in on the Windows 7 Beta? Or is it just tough?

EDIT: Apparently downloading it via bittorrent is very much tolerated. Result!

You can download it from Microsoft's website, so yeah it's pretty legal ;)

I've been using the x64 Win7 7057 beta on and off for a while now and it's a brilliant release of Windows despite the fact it's still in beta. Compare that to the beta, the release candidate of Vista, or even the RTM version, and it's a vast improvement in terms of stability and compatability. Think the looks of Vista (which is all it had going for it really) with the speed of XP, and you'll be sold already!

That said, I only ever use Win7 occasionally for gaming, OS X is far better :P

I had a customer a while ago that was using a workstation for 3d assembly
at the time the 4gb of ram bits and pieces wasn't as popular or a common enough problem.
as I recall we put 8 gigs of ram on the workstation and then he only had a 32bit O/S...DOH.
there is a windows startup switch which allows windows to correctly detect the amount of ram but I don't think it really makes it usable. Back then 2-3 years ago 64 bit windows for me wasn't a great option on reliability. now it seems to be a decent O/S for general usage...
my main concern was for driver maturity. I think he was using a fireGL card or something similar

I recently went from 4GB 6400 to 8GB 8500 (seeing as its so cheap atm).

There isn't much difference but the system seems to be slightly snappier.

Do you run your 8500 at 8500 (1033 mhz) or on a divider? Last I saw it wasnt possible to get 8GB to run at 8500 speeds?

What's your sticks and setup otherwise as it's something i'm interested in certainly.

XP maybe old but it is proven technology, the number of problems and incompatabily issues in vista is amazing, even with microsofts own products (Word etc), I'm not sure what 7 is like but scene as its a beta means that there could be unknown problems people haven't found yet.

That's worse than twaddle. I've never heard of a single issue with Vista and Office. Like lots of other people, I use Vista every day and run into fewer problems than I do on XP.

Vista's now a really solid OS, particularly x64. The only thing that's amazing is the number of people who haven't actually owned Vista and yet are still lapping up the early horror stories. Please stop spreading misinformation.

I currently have vista on a new laptop which also has office 2007, it seems whenever i close a word document it seems to think the program has stopped working and trys to restart it. its true that vista is better than it used to be but i am still finding issues with a number of things

Windows Server supports PAE, or physical address extension to work with more then 4Gb on a 32 bit system.

Not there for XP or Vista.

Get yourself Vista 64bit or wait for Windows 7 release, don't care how stable it is cant recommend a beta OS to anyone as their main OS.

32Bit OS's can only supply 4GB's worth of memory addresses, so after your vid card and other bits and bobs your typically left with 3.25GB to 3.5GBs worth of addys for your RAM

really its up to you, if you don't mind vistas problems go for that, if you don't mind maybe losing data or having to rebuild the system, or maybe having some compatability issues go for windows 7 if you need something stable go for XP64bit

LOL!!!!!!!!!

Xp 64bit is terrible.

Go with vista or windows 7.
Vistas problems? WTF!

Don't listen to this guy.
