Integra Project

Great thread, looking forward to seeing it complete. Are you going to have a dyno run once its been ran in?

I had to have a rebuild on my 98 spec JDM, engine was very worn when I got it but for the money I paid I couldnt complain. Although I had o get mine done quick and money was tight so it was pretty much standard parts, had it back on the road in just over a week, lucky for me my dad is a self employed mechanic so I didnt have much to do.

Good work so far, I look forward to the next installment.

Brief update. Head is back, it's had new valve guides ffitted and new seats cut.

Shame the valve spring seats dont fit over the valve guides :(

A quick before and after

I really wanted this finished this week, having no car to get about and pick stuff up really does slow things down though.

Right, suppose it's time I brought this back from the dead.

Not a huge amount has happened with my car since I last updated this. I've been to French Car Show this weekend and seeing the cars on track has given me a kick in the arse. I want this done ASAP now so i'm pulling out all the stops.

The issues I was having with the valve spring seats turned out to be that they weren't pressed into the head quite far enough :( I took it back to Cleasby's Engineering who did the work on the cylinder head and they sorted that straight away, they're a good bunch who i'd definitley recommend, and am using again ( more on that in a moment)

When I got the head back I had to assemble it all, which turned out to be a monster of a fiddly job! Trying to get somewhere to work when I could get the cylinder head supported with enough room to fit the valve spring compressor over it resulted in the contraption you'll see below. Putting the first few valves / springs together was a nightmare, well getting the collets in was anyway, but I soon got a good technique going and it went straight together then.

Tonight I've done some more work on the head, I fitted the rockers, LMAs and the VTEC solenoid, the head needs to be mated to the block before I can put the cams in. Also tonight I've fitted a new waterpump, and refitted the oil cooler and thermostat housing. I wanted to get the oil pump on too but I can't find the sealant I bought.

Now for a wee bit of bad news: When I was putting my pistons and rods in I'm pretty sure I overstreched the ARP rod bolts. DOH!!

There's no way I'd want to have them in my engine if they have been overtorqued and permanently deformed, so I ordered a new set and a mate is dropping them off at Cleasbys Engineering tomorrow to have the old ones removed and the new ones put in. £81 for 8 bolts and I pretty much wreck them, nice one Neil.

Anyway, photos.

I know I keep saying this but it really shouldn't be too long now

A set of bolts is just a set of bolts at the end of the day, it was me being a tool that's possibly wrecked them.

I'm off out into the garage in about half an hour, i'll update when I come back in.

No, they stretch, they're just stronger. I seem to remember the packaging saying they can withstand something like 200,000 psi.

I've gotten a fair bit done tonight but Fotki is down for me, anyone else?

Fotki is back and i've uploaded some of tonights photos now.

I haven't got my pistons and rods back from the engineering place yet, so that's holding things up now, but not for long. I haven't been able to progress loads because of this, but i've been able to get a few little jobs out of the way.

Started off by fitting the oil pump since I found my sealant. (I'd put it away so I'd know where it was  at me)

Next up was the crankshaft oil seal on the flywheel side of the crank. More sealant. This was a bit of a faf to fit as the engine stand was getting in the way.

I also got the altenator brackets fitted, although you can't see them very well on the right hand side of the photo here.

And finally the flywheel fitted, but not torqued down yet. I think this is the most awesome looking bit of metal i've ever bought, it just looks cool :D

This is how i've left it tonight. I share the garage with my dad who harbors an obscene amount of fishing equipment, which takes up half of the garage (Hell, it's his garage, I can hardly complain) but it does make working space a bit tight. Just goes to show you don't need a huge amount of space to do something like this.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement people, I might just get it finished at this pace :D:cool:

I've justust ordered a replacement set of piston rings from Honda as one has been damaged and they only sell them in piston sets, I also ordered a PCV valve as my dad accidentally broke the old one and a spring for the timing belt tensioner. £101 :(

I phoned the local Springfield Honda garage in Sunderland and they guy was nothing but a pain, making out like he was doing me a favour by trying to get the parts by next week. I told him not to bother and phoned Springfield Honda in Durham who I used to use and they were like a breath of fresh air. They guy has promised to have them by Friday, is leaving them with the workshop so I can collect them out of hours and we had a quick chat about what I was doing with the car. Much better :).

Good to see you making progress again mate, hang in there, it'll be finished before you know it

I've hit a bit of a stumbling block.

I can't find anywhere locally that will press in the new rod bolts and check / resize the big ends once they're in place. i've tried the local engine building places but they don't know what i'm talking about :(

God knows where to look or take them to get done!
