Intel 45nm mainstream quad core comes in March

There aren't any 790i's for sale yet it's NV's next gen chipset.
Certainly have one on my wish list as well.

DDR3 has already dropped quite dramtically, 2GB prices are no worse than DDR2 prices were a year ago or so, and DDR2 prices are rising while DDR3 prices are falling, won't be an easy choice in 6 months time.

well I am not getting into an argument about it.. people can spend their money as they wish.. but in a couple of months time when all the new Q9450 owners cant hit more than 3.6/3.7ghz stable as they realise that 90% of motherboards cant do 450+ 24/7 without a lot of messing (by this I am talking about more than 450FSB i.e. 463 for 3.7ghz) I will point them to your recommendation of the CPU.. ofc there are going to be people running them faster as is the situation now.. but how many people on this board run a Quad at 4ghz+ 24/7? will be exactly the same % of people achieving 3.7+ on the Q9450

Frankly as I started out I do not see the point of upgrading from a good Q6600 G0 spending £220 odd for a few more instruction sets and a 5-10% per clock performance increase.. If you want to spend £220 put your G0 under water and run 24/7 stable @ 4ghz and you will have a nice little setup for the next round of intel CPU when they might actually be reason to upgrade
Remember that a lot of people sell off their old hardware to pay for it, a Q6600 will fetch a nice price, so the price of upgrading might be a lot lower. It's possible to earn money in Denmark by purchasing hardware from the UK and reselling, the upgrade from my 8800GTS to 8800GT actually earned me more money than it cost, and the jump to 8800GTS 512 only cost about 20£

This upgrade will cost me £60 after selling my Q6600 I can spend that on a night out.

What I din't want to do was to leave the sale of my Q6600 to late and only be able to shift it for sub 100

aaahhhhh fck!!

Here I was chuffed having just installed my brand new G0 lastnight.

And les than 2 months to go for new chip. I could have waited seeing as I had a E6600 which is now sitting under my monitor!!! :(

Aii by the time i get these things ddr3 will be droped in price :)

plus the better motherboard for overclock, not that it will be needed with the new quads, well it might for a better FSB.

I would have to agree with easyrider, sell q6600 now while its still worth something.

I plan to get the q9450 and an Asus Rampage, just not sure if I'm going to go DDR3 or stick with DDR2. DDR2 most likely.

Hold am I right to say that the new 45nm chipsets will only run on DDR3 RAM? Or would I be able to have the new 'Penryn' and run DDR2? If this isn't the case then what was the whole point of saying motherboards like mine Gigabyte P35 DQ6 was capable of running future 45nm CPUs as well as current gen CPUs like the Quads etc?

Is that Q9300 series and Q9450 and Q9550 I think it is? Anyone have any ideas when they coming to OcUK? Was thinking of going for a Q6600 but just seen what the Q9300 can do and sweet jesus it competes with the QX950! What are the differences between the three editions?

*EDIT* Are the Q9300, Q9450 and Q9550 based on the Yorkfield Core? I am getting mixed information on Google... some saying it uses the Kentsfield core which is strange as I would have expected them to use the Yorkfield core?

9300 has a 7.5 multi.. realistically you will hit 3375mhz to 3500mhz depending on the FSB your motherboard can do on a quad

9400 has a 8 multi.. so 3600mhz to 3700mhz

QX9650 has an unlocked multi have seen them at around 4350mhz to 4500mhz

Prime stable this is

Well the Q9450 sounds like the one that will be most popular with everyone. Is the Q9450 literally the same as Q6600 in terms of value? For instance, people opted for Q6600 as opposed to Q7700 thus:

Q9450 = Q6600
Q9550 = Q7700

Or am I wrong here?

Q9450 is around £215 Q9300 around £190

But the Q9300 comes with a smaller cache doesn't it? The Q9450 comes with a cache that is on par with the QX series from what I have read.

bah, im not sure I can wait that long for Quad 45nm goodness. I may just grab a E8400. Anything will be better than my rusty socket 754 chip!

But it seems E8400s are hard to come by too, any news on when they will be readily available?
