Intel 45nm mainstream quad core comes in March

For someone like me who watercools, is there really any benefit with going for 45nm?

Clock for clock there isn't really a big difference is there?

I'm not really bothered if the 45nm is 5-10% faster, but if it is 20%-30% faster I may just wait a little longer to go quad...

My e4300 is fine for now. :)

You won't have to upgrade then, it's 5-10% IPC improvement and unless you use SSE4 instructions, they probably won't get much higher, will be motherboard restricted for now.
I'm looking at a mobo with strap modification for trying to clock one of these, maybe one of the high-end asus mobos.

It's a pain in the **** upgrading at the moment as there seems to be a complete lack of new processors available. I've been waiting on an E8400 for a week now from a comp. and it's going to be another week at the earliest.

I would like to cancel and get a Q9450 but I can imagine they will be eevn more in demand!

Cool, I'll go for a q6600 then. :)

Well im gona wait until i can get a mainstream 45nm quad just because i have a E6750 atm so i can wait hehe :D

What i said was of course based on how everything looks now, if for some reason some new motherboard is developed that'll magically clock any 45nm chip to 4ghz+, that situation is of course different, but you can just sell of the Q6600 without losing much money then, and you'll have had at least 2 months with a great chip.

TBH, I don't really need 4GHZ, and really for me I'll be more than happy with a quad @ 3ghz or more - Hence q6600. I like to keep an eye on the fastest thing out there, but unless the is a huge difference, I'm more than happy with a less than cutting edge system. :)

2008 - quad cores all round!!!

would be nice if the price of the existing stuff dropped now to accomodate
need desperatly to upgrade my cpu/mainboard

shame the pc world sdverts have the public believe that centrino is an actual processor
that is the kind of stuff that dictates what goes 'mainstream'

i guess its just like all enthusiasts having dualcore now
they will move to enthusiast standard of 4core soon [like me!!]

a guy at work tried to tell me today that his centrino laptop would 'beat my gaming desktop into the ground'
ok mate
ok

Sounds like people will be better off staying with there q6600 go than upgrading if judging anything with the e8500/8400 OC >4g gives a hard time with temps, will be even worse with the extra 2cores but good for stock speeds and very low VC and gives the same or better in benches than my old OC [email protected].

I don't tend to upgrade much, so would it be worth me waiting for this rather than get a current chip, as i won't be upgrading for another 2 years...

Currently on an AMD 3700+ system...

Sure, Penryn should be great, and paired up with that PSU and the Tuniq Tower you should have a nice foundation for further upgrades.

Yes but what you have to remember is that clock for clock the 45nm quads

are faster than the 65nm parts.

So a 3.6ghz Q9450 is like having a 4ghz Q6600 under the hood.

Something that people rarely had 24/7 due to cooling etc..

I ran my Q6600 at 3.8ghz 24/7 and will glady have a Q9450 running at 3.6ghz

as I still have a faster cooler running PC that uses less power and has a new

instruction set.

complete waste of time, anyone who has a decent q6600 @ 3.6+ with low'ish volts would only buy a q9450 for something to do.

and as the wolfdales have shown these 45nm chips run super hot once given voltage due to their low VID, dollars to donuts these things are like heaters once they get to 3.4-3.6 and need volts.

worth the hassle and cost for 5-10% improvement over 65nm clock for clock?

Exactly, nor worth the extra £50-60.

If the retails dont have the FSB wall, I may get one just to clock but i think ill stick with what I have until Nehalem.
