Intel 45nm mainstream quad core comes in March

Well retail Wolfdales were on the whole a bit of a disappointment when compared to ES samples, didn’t scale as well as expected, idle higher than expected and some run unbelievably toasty.

The fact Yorkfiled ES samples are already a disappointment doesn’t bode well for our retail chips.

One thing’s for sure I am not going to be the 1st to sample the bleeding edge this time round, going to sit back and see how people get on.

Call me old fashioned but I like my upgrades to actually be upgrades not slight improvements :)

Here’s me waiting to see how easy gets on with his :)

if the ES samples are crap who knows, it might mean retail chips are actually good.

I dout that... anyway until they hit the shops its all speculation and hype.. But if the wolfdales are anything to go by then I would expect another round of disapointments!

Certainly not worth upgrading your Q6600 until we have seen the proof that the yorkfields are actually worth the upgrade... and call me Mr Bad News! but I dont think they will be

I still hold by my earlier comment that you are better spending £220 on a good water cooling setup if you have a low VID Q6600

So that you can choose which NB strap you want to use, should help with stability at some clocks, it's the reason why sometimes 395 fsb is not stable while 405 is.

ah...well I can select different NB straps on my P5K but I thought it was mainly for choosing fsb/memory ratios.

complete waste of time, anyone who has a decent q6600 @ 3.6+ with low'ish volts would only buy a q9450 for something to do.

and as the wolfdales have shown these 45nm chips run super hot once given voltage due to their low VID, dollars to donuts these things are like heaters once they get to 3.4-3.6 and need volts.

worth the hassle and cost for 5-10% improvement over 65nm clock for clock?

The gains are bigger with apps that use the SS4 instructions sets.

Adobe Production Studio being one of them.

You keep going on about clock speed when...

a: Q9450 is faster clock for clock over 65nm parts
b: has more cache than 65nm parts
c: uses less power than 65nm parts
d: runs cooler
e: has new instrauctions sets that see big gains in multimedia tasks

Oh and the upgrade will cost me around 60 quid from the sale of my Q6600 ( a night out with the lads)
