***Intel Core i5 / i7 (1156) Reviews and Discussion Thread***

My 955 rig will be delivered tomorrow. Im not sure if I can stomach seeing those benches or not :(

Well the 955 was just behind the i7's in games etc. but in CPU hungry/multi-threaded scenarios the i7s obviously came out on top.
The 955 v i5 should be quite a bit closer imo :)

Why is there such a huge difference in price between the 860 and 870??

The 870 is only clocked an extra 130MHz, and it costs £213 more.

The same reason why the 940/950 costs £200+ more than a 920 for 300Mhz extra. A combination of byzantine marketing decisions by Intel, and the virtual monopoly of the CPU market that they command.

TLDR: Because they can.

AMD rig just doesn't excite me anyway at all. I think I've become complacent with Intel rigs

Its my first rig, so I dont really have anything to compare it with since all my previous computers have been prebuilt and I didnt know anything about computers back then.

But, from what Ive seen, the 955 can outdo most quadcores, so I went with the 955.

Well this is a tough choice and a half! i5 or 955? To be honest if it's still close I'll be going AMD; it's still a good £30 cheaper for a 955 build on a similar mobo.

Which mobo would you be using?

If I go AMD it will be the Gigabyte UD4P, which is £30 cheaper than the i5's UD4...

Incidentally, Evga in idiotic motherboard name shocker!

I dunno, the SLI/Crossfire capabilities on the p55 motherboards is what i really wanted.

I'd like the choice of Nvidia and Ati without having to change mobo etc etc. x58 gear had all of this, but was quite costly.

thing is that 30 quid gap dissapears if you manage to get something like the gd65 for 65 quid

True...although word on the "street" is that the MSIs don't clock that well...not that I won't be exceptionally happy to snaffle one!

I'll be interested in seeing what bundle deals OcUK do anyway.
