***Intel Core i5 / i7 (1156) Reviews and Discussion Thread***

For me it's around £80 difference between i5+P55+Dual Channel and i7+x58+Triple Channel.

That's a good chunk towards a new 4890 :)

Yep, you're currently looking at a Core i5 system being around £100 cheaper than a Core i7 system.

100 quid saving is not enough to stifle the upgrade path to i9,HT at a nice price.

The P55 mobos need to be sub 100 and the 750 around 120 imo.

100 quid saving is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I totally agree with you. As I posted in another thread, it's a pointless upgrade for any overclockers and gamers unless the price is a lot lower for some of the fully featured boards. The price at the moment still isn't 'mainstream' to me, it's way too close to the i7 920 + X58 etc, which is better.

Also jumping onto LGA1156 now seems silliy in light of intels plans for LGA1366.

But for that £100 you get 2 gig more ram, 4 more threads and then taking into account the future of x58 with i9 etc, for me i think x58 is still best in the grand scheme of things. If P55 were cheaper, i may have a different opinion.

Its all down to peoples personal preferances/needs really, just my two pence worth!

I was just simply making a comparison, that's all. I wasn't stating that a Core i5 system was the better choice over a Core i7 system due to it being £100 cheaper. It was just a comparison. :)

I have just changed the thread title and have also added some reviews to the original post. I will continue to add some more throughout the day.

Once prices settle and there's a better choice of motherboards and memory kits I'd expect a Lynnfield system to save £150 over Bloomfield. Personally I'm not interested in a multi-GPU setup, and as good as Gulftown looks next year it'll be expensive, so the upgrade path and headroom provided by LGA-1366 and triple-channel DDR3 doesn't interest me either.

The increased gains Lynnfield gets from turbo mode do interest me however, as I wouldn't be doing any extreme overclocking and trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of the system, and the improved power consumption is a definite winner.

Give it a month or three and a Core i5, P55 and ATI 58xx will make a very good bang-for-buck system.

Im at work so cant see the screenys so could someone tell me what the temperture difference is between an i5 and i7?
Is it like +/-5*C ?

So just to clarify and confirm I have my head round this -

1366 = triple-channel = high-end
1156 = dual-channel = mainstream

So future high end 6 core high performance CPU's be coming out under with the 1366.

the i7 1156 CPUS's 860 and 870 are to allow an i7 chip to operate with dual channel making it cheaper to get a unit together?

I agree, but I reckon the motherboard prices will come down, once the initial launch fad has gone, making them more realistic budget equivalents to i7s. Atm though I think you may aswell go i7...
