Intel Core i9-7900X reviews are going live!

I'm so confused about CPUs at the moment. The last 5 years have been easy. Buy the most expensive Intel CPU you can afford. Now with AMD rocking the boat with some really cool stuff it has suddenly become much more complex.

I don't know whether to wait for Thread Ripper or get a i9 7900X when they come out? I currently have an i7 3930k at 4.4Ghz.

I totally agree, I don't want to purchase now and regret it in a few months. The only option is to wait it out a wee bit?

Yeah. I guess waiting is the only real option available at the moment. I'm not complaining though. More choice is good for the consumer, but man, it does start to get confusing.

Switching out my x58 for x99 was mostly worth it for a decent speed increase on 6 cores, but I'm not really feeling an upgrade urge yet with these new chips. If i did change out for another 6 core, would the speed increase even be worth it? It likely won't even be much of an upgrade, i guess 8 cores could be called a nice upgrade, but other than editing video now and again i probably wouldn't even get any benefit at all.

So unless one of the upcoming CPU's would increase my minimum frame rates by a decent amount (at 1440p) then i don't see any point.

At this point though yeah it is best to wait and see, since Coffeelake is supposedly due so soon after Skylake-x it would be silly not to wait for benchmarks first.

you're on a 5820k I guess? to be honest there's little point in upgrading as long as yours can OC well.

you've always got the option of a 5960x upgrade in the future, the J code ones seem to overclock better (last batch) and ive seem them go as low as £500 new on ebay.

but to be honest even swapping to a 5960x at 4.6ghz wouldn't change your minimums much, 6 cores is more than enough for gaming.

faster ram might help? some games in particular seem to love ram speed increases.

It depends on your usage really a 16 core 4ghz Threadripper will be amazeballs in stuff like encoding and rendering but for gaming clockspeed will still be king so a ~4.5ghz SL-X will be better. TBH with a 4.4ghz 3930K you'll not see a massive difference in gaming whatever you get.

Cheers.

Waiting around to see the prices. I have no doubt I'll be laughing and then say I'll wait for Coffeelake instead. I can see it already lol

haven't you checked out the pricing yet? some preorders have appeared in the US

the 6 core looks pretty competitive at $380 should oc really nicely too.

but for mainstream / gaming use the coffeelake will probably be better for less money/cheaper motherboard

I do do some video encoding / rendering which is why I want a high core count CPU so I guess waiting for Threadripper is the best course of action at this point. As long as my new CPU isn't slower than my current one in games I'll be happy. It is all about the productivity applications for me really.
