For a P4 bandwidth and memory speed is more important than timings. This isn't the case for the A64 though

I'd just keep increasing the FSB bit by bit. I'd only increase the volts to your CPU if it is showing signs of instability

More volts to the memory can help it maintain higher speeds or tighter timings

If you check the memory bandwidth benches even on an Intel system you'll see how much slackening the timings affect system's performance ;) especially if timings are CL5 5-5-15 !!!!
 
Yes, timings make a difference

But I always thought that on the P4 you'd get a better result with the memory running at 667MHz, 5-5-5-15 than running at 533MHz, 4-4-4-12 for example

Yeah, timings will make a difference, there is no doubt about that I mean there is a massive difference between 5-5-5-15 and 4-4-4-12 but when dealing with a P4, as long as the bandwidth increases enough, it should be worth it. So I agree with ajgoodfellow on this one.
 
Not in this case, using Super Pi, with tight timings and the memory at 233mhz, the result was faster than using loose timings at 320mhz, only by milliseconds, but still faster.
 
hi there

currently im running a barton clocked at 2.4ghz with 1gb of geil value ddr400 and a nvidia 6800gs AGP

the barton is totally poor when doing any multitasking so would i notice a big difference if i was to get a pentiumD 805 and overclock it ?

the two mobos ive been looking at are :

asus P5P800SE
asus P5VD1-X

as they both seem to support ddr and AGP

is it likely i could hit 4ghz (or near as possible)with this setup and good cooling or is theyre any limitations with either the motherboards or my ram ?

oh and which mobo would you recommend for overclocking that supports AGP ?


sorry for the multiple questions but im an intel noobeh :p
any help would be great

is that only because of the non existing pci e lock though ?

im going to be sticking with agp for quite a while by the looks of my bank account :p
 
asus P5P800SE has an Intel 865 springdale chipset

The s478 P4P800PE board was a demon overclocker :) so the P5P800SE is the same board with the newer CPU socket, DDR and AGP.
Just a pity Abit did not add the new socket to the AI7.

Do a google and you should get some good reading on this board and the 805 :)

Also these rams are supposed to run 667 using CL4 even if cpu-z says their default at 333mhz are CL5 5-5-15 which are just pathetic. You probably loose even more performance by CL5 5-5-15 and 10fsb's more than with CL4 4-4-12, so keep the timings tight for better performance.

try to increase vcore a bit more... set it to 1.45, tight timings back using 2.1vdimm (if system behaves same as before then your mobo or ram is not enough) see if it works alright otherwise try 1:1 divider (ie set bios ram ratio to 266) to see if ram or mobo limits you.

OK, here goes:
DDR = +0.3V
FSB = 190
Memory multiplier = 1.5 (it was the lowest setting) which gave me 285.5 Mhz
Mem = 4, 4, 4, 12
Tried changing the Vcore to 1.45v but seem to have changed the CPU Vid instead (I don't know what this means, but it's running ok)



What should I do now?

cool, vcore doesn't seem to have been increased according to cpu-z reading.
try changing vcore this time and increase fsb... come on 200 it asks for it!

btw is it stable there now?

edit: your memory runs at 570mhz ddr2 speeds now, you could also try a higher memory multiplier (1.6? or whatever the next option is) to run them at their spec speeds (667)

see if it will work

That's a huge overclock and on a low vCore too - nice!

You might just get 4GHz out of it yet!
