Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

Wages have increased by a tiny amount the last few years while the cost of living has gone through the roof, but that's not what i was getting at. Since the original i5/i7 was launched the prices have increased with each generation. I expect the i5 4690 to follow the trend and be over £180 when released.

Back when the AMD Athlon 64 series was launched on Socket 754 i did my first self built pc using a 3400+ which cost me £115. Funnily enough, i sold it for more or less that amount as well. AMD cpu's went for silly prices second hand back then.

Eh?

The 4690 has been up at £158.99 since 12/5/14!

Should have gone to specsavers :p

If the 4690K lands at 180, that's not more expensive than the 4670K, as the 4670K was pushing 191 at launch.

Agreed, if the heat (TIM) issues and overclocking are better on these chips £180 for the 4670K and £250 for the 4790K would be a fair price imho.

Saw the ASUS Maximus Ranger Z97 review, first time I've been tempted to switch from Gigabyte in a long time. That Ranger board is awesome for the price..

Must resist..

I like the ranger board too, but I'll be getting the Asus Hero. It just like the Ranger, but the Hero as red LED's and the ranger doesn't.

I always buy Asus boards, usually between £100 and £150 though, haven't figured out yet why people buy stuff like " Z87 MAXIMUS VI EXTREME ", the ones I have seem to do just fine with overclocking / features, the only reason I can see why you would want this is for more than 3 PCIe-16x slots

Hi everyone. I was watching this video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZWu3Sw-R8E) about when to upgrade but one thing i picked up on was about purchasing motherboards that are using new chipsets. He mentions is that new chipsets being less refined than the previous chipset they replace.
I was wondering do people feel this true and is it worth waiting for motherboard revisions?

According to info leaked from TW, don't expect too much improvement from next-gen 4790k.
Performance is almost same as 4770k, Fritz Chess score is about 20000 at 5G, vcore 1.54V, 95 degree, won't do 32M hyperPi even increase vcore to 1.6V.

Amd havent had a decent cpu since the days of s939, which were brilliant chips. Intel brought out the c2d range, then the c2q's on s775. They havent looked back since. Sure their current range of cpu's appeal to those who seek bang for buck, ie 800 series. But i for one would definitely not pair such a chip with dual modern gpu's such as 780/290. You will be bottlenecked big time. The only good thing amd have going is on the gpu side, mantle is a great feature but still very much in it's infancy.

AMD chips are designed and priced to compete against i3 and i5 in the main which they do pretty well in everyday tasks.

They don't currently compete against i7 but they are looking to change this in the future.

A respected source I trust tells me they have tested 4690K with poor results. We have our 4690K and 4790K samples next week so I will try then but I am not holding my breath.

Ill be very interested in your 4790k tests 8 pack, considering getting one if they work on z87. Regarding and, it would be great to see them offer something that competes with the i7's, more choice is always good for us as consumers

Disappointing, least we know not to expect to much though. Still like the look of the Z97 motherboards. If Devil's Canyon isn't that great hopefully at least Z97 is compatible with Broadwell 14nm..

Posting random info with no source is pretty pointless. I could post saying it overclocks to 6Ghz at 60dc, without a link it's worthless.

what if they release new motherboards with even better specs than z97 for Broadwell ?

Believe it or not, it's up to you. That's as much as I can say, are you familiar with the term 'NDA'?

I gave Vcore, Chess score, temperature, what else are you expecting?I have screen snapshot, but I'm not allowed to post it here at this stage.

Besides, I posted this info first, later 8pack confirmed 'A respected source I trust tells me they have tested 4690K with poor results'. So my statement is not totally pointless.
