Nice that they are finally fixing the TIM issue. Hopefully this will carryover to Haswell-E :)

Glad I didn't give in to temptation when I was considering buying a 4770K now.

E series are soldered. It's only the mainstream chips that Intel cheap out on the TIM. This is good news for those that can upgrade to these chips though. Slight speed bump, new process but no die shrink. Improved TIM. These might actually be nice chips. Those on Haswell I3's / I5's might have a worthy upgrade option.

Devil's Canyon is codename for a breed of hand-picked chips with "insane" overclocking potential. In addition to binned dies, the chips feature a performance-optimized TIM between the die and the integrated heatspreader (IHS). The dies will be placed on special "high tolerance" packages, with equally "special" LGA contact points. The chips will be designed with higher voltage tolerance levels. Devil's Canyon is expected to branded under the existing Core i7-4xxx series, possibly with "Extreme" brand extension. It will be compatible with motherboards based on the Z97 chipset.

These chips could actually be quite nice. Especially for those on i3 / i5 Haswell looking for an upgrade without changing mobo.

Oops, I stand corrected, no evidence there of Broadwell support on Z87 then. I though it was a bit early.

'Broadwell' will be on 9 series.

'Haswell' and 'Haswell Refresh' on 8 and 9 series.

The Haswell refresh is actually looking quite decent. More than just a slight speed bump. These chips seem heavily optimized towards overclocking.

Intel has so many new CPU and refresh CPU's coming out it's hard to keep up :p

for the price they will go even tim is improved not sure if worth it, mine 2600k that i payed 160£ couple years ago still strong, and all api and dx changes making less bottleneck in future, might as well wait for ddr4 for full upgrade.

Yeah this is a good point. Must admit although I'm really tempted by Haswell -E. With the premium for things like DDR4 and new Mobo's / CPU's plus with Direct X / Mantle working for lower CPU overhead. Thinking I might just stick with my current setup and just grab a 20nm GPU when they appear. If DirectX does it's job well would many of us on fairly capable setups even need a new CPU?

Obviously for benching more power is always better but just for regular gaming any decent Intel CPU from past few years with a decent GPU might be ok for a long while.

If I had the will power could potentially hold out for Skylake / Skylake -E. That would be a beast of an upgrade.. DDR4 prices would be much lower by then..

Be interesting to see how long I can hold out for by the time Haswell -E launches :p

A lot of people seem to be going on about x99. How does it compare (as far as we know) to Skylake which is what I am currently waiting on?

Skylake will be the next architecture change on 14nm. Broadwell 14nm is the die shrink of Haswell, Skylake is new arch built on 14nm. Mainstream chips will come first, with first DDR4 support for mainstream Intel chips. Some say Skylake could still be limited to quad core, whereas Haswell -E has up to 8 cores, Skylake -E possibly more..

Haswell -E X99 (DDR4 support) (Up to 8 cores) Q2/Q3 2014
Haswell Refresh (DDR3 support) (Quad cores) Q2 2014
Broadwell (DDR3 support) (Quad cores) Q4 2014???
Skylake (DDR4 support) (Possibly still only quad core) 2015???

Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh CPUs Launch Date Revealed

It looks like Intel will launch its Core "Haswell" Refresh line of processors sooner than Computex 2014. According to sources in the IT retail, Intel could launch these new chips, led by the Core i7-4790K, on May 10th in most markets. An armada of new socket LGA1150 motherboards, based on Intel's Z97 Express chipset should launch around those dates, probably in the week leading up to the 10th. Intel Core "Haswell" Refresh processors offer marginally better performance over current Core "Haswell" chips, at existing price points (i.e., they will displace existing chips from their current price-points); while the 9-series chipset offers features such as M.2 SSD support, making you ready for a tidal wave of 1000 MB/s SSDs that will launch around Computex.

The only exciting thing about this chip launch is actually just the motherboards to accompany them. I am going to guess these new SSDs that take advantage of the new motherboards will cost a bomb per gb.

I am mainly excited to see what new colours are on the next wave of motherboards (please give me a funky purple one).

Yeah the mobo's should be nice, Z97 should be good for a long while yet as well. With upcoming Broadwell on 14nm next year.

Hmm, so many options Z79 / X99.. Determined to not spend any money ! Let's see how long my resilience lasts :p Probably be the first on here with Z97 and 4790K :D

I'm still going to go on record and say I expect the refresh to be compatible in its entirety CPU wise to be compatible with Z87.

For no other reason, than we always get scaremongering with Intel and it 9/10 times isn't the case.

From what I've read the majority of Haswell refresh CPU's will be compatible with older 1150 motherboards, with only a few of the Devil's Canyon chips (For all features) and upcoming 'Broadwell 14nm' (Only work on Z97) needing Z97..

So without reading the whole thread whats the benifits of this Z97 refresh going to be over waiting a few more months for the X99?

Get it sooner..

Cheaper CPU's. Broadwell 14nm support..

Apart from that X99 is the superior but more expensive chipset. DDR4 support, up to 8 cores. Broadwell -E support.

X99 is the one to go for imho. 8 Intel cores should last a long long time..

Intel Starts Selling 'Haswell Refresh' Processors

Without any real fanfare Intel has now kicked off sales and shipments of processors part of 'Haswell Refresh' line. An official launch for the updated Haswell offering, complete with motherboards based on the 9 Series LGA1150 chipsets, is reportedly planned for next month but since the CPUs got the go-ahead you can expect them to reach stores shortly.

Intel Haswell refresh in the shops in May

The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn that Intel may release an update to its desktop Haswell "refresh" processors in May.

The source of the rumour is Hermitage Akihabara . It claims Intel will launch its new processors, including its flagship Core i7-4790K, on May 10 in most markets. These next generation Haswell chips will include Intel's Z97 chipset, which provides support for faster and larger M.2 SATA Express drives.

^^ I don't really agree. Would rather Intel released something than nothing, for those on Sandybridge or older, if they are considering a move up to Haswell, at least they can jump on Z97 and know they have upgrade options later on as well with Broadwell '14nm'.

These new chips are supposed to be heavily tweaked for overclocking, updated packaging materials, improved TIM, specifically re-engineered for enhanced performance and overclocking.

Sure they will appeal to some. Even the unlocked Pentium might encourage new adopters to the platform who could move to a quad core later on.

X99 coming soon as well. Intel working hard imho..

Yes it would be solid until Skylake, Remember these are "Haswell Refresh" which literally means 100MHZ clock boost and a little bit better in the thermal department, That's it, No new architecture.
It's like going from a 3770K to a 4770K but with even less noticeable performance gain and no architectural change, Z97 is a pure cash grab i.e milking it to the extreme.

Don't see it this way at all. A newer chipset with updated features and support for 14nm chips isn't a cash grab, neither are improved chips aimed at overclocking. Sure those on 4770K don't need to worry about it, but it's nice for those thinking about upgrading this year from older stuff Sandybridge or older etc. Those guys will get the latest chipset with longevity and even better chips..

Way to much pessimism and negativity here imho. What have AMD done lately? Yet another bunch of rehashed APU's and oh yeah that's right nothing else :D

Good to see Intel making more overclockable chips, but really it's what they should have done in the first place with Haswell. £200+ for an unlocked chip (4770k) with a price premium to allow overclocking, that then doesn't even have a soldered IHS, was taking the **** a bit. I imagine Intel lost a fair few potential sales by releasing a series of chips with not only a small IPC boost but also limited overclocking ability due to temperatures.

It would be better for everyone (well, maybe not Intel) if AMD were more competitive at the higher end.

My 4770K ran @ 4.6Ghz for benching. That was using a standard Antec Kuhler. That's pretty good for a £200+ chip imho.

These new chips are more refined for overclocking. Even better, those on 4770K's don't need to bother, but for those upgrading this year it's great for them. Along with newer chipset, more features and future 14nm support..

X99 for the ultra enthusiast soon..

What's not to like?

Where you at AMD?

All black PCB looks nice:)

Yeah, really nice looking boards those MSI's. Hope Gigabyte have something similar. I only build with Gigabyte mobo's these days.

Read today that the unlocked 'K' chips might not launch until July..

Only non overclocking chips in May. Bit disappointing. If X99 is July as well, that would def be the better upgrade pah imho.

5820K is shaping up to be a beast..
