Temps yeah. According to 8 Pack earlier in this thread, a few guys at computex delidded some 4790k's and found out that the TIM is very similair to the stuff used in the current 4770k. The ihs is thinner though and likely less glue, therefore allowing the ihs to sit closer to the die.

Most recent posts from people trying to oc 4770k's still state very high temps compared to the figures in reviews of the 4790k. At stock mine in sig will hit 77c under p95, when i get the 4790k ill do a comparison, but generally the DC chips seem to run 10c + lower than current gen.
 
I assume any Core i7 4770K ATM are earlier production batches,and the Core i7 4790K the current ones. It makes more sense to make the changes to all the chips,instead of bifurcating the production line - after all every CPU from the Core i5 4440 to the Core i7 4770K do use the same packaging AFAIK.
 
The IHS may even be more concave if it is thinner. Haswell and Ivy have very concave surfaces and their IHS is fairly thick. Lap them and temps improve a few degrees minimum, so i guess they are back to using flatter thinner IHS'

The refresh will replace Haswell which is probably about to be EOL.
 
What's the cheapest rig that's going to overclock this? I was thinking of building a Celeron machine with a cheap gfx card. But this might be a bit more fun. But not if it costs too much more. I get that the Amd might be a better balanced cpu but I'm thinking a 1150 system might give a longer life. Some will say live in the now and that's true too.

When did you guys order it? I ordered mine 3 Jun, 14, 11:06 am, Still not got any emails. I really hope mine gets sent, Only thing im waiting for.

You're setting the bar low for benchmarking lol, 100mhz increase! :(
I want a minimum of 5Ghz for benchmarks, will be selling the chips that dont do that on the MM.

Be a right downer if i actually end up with a downgrade from my 4770k after all this.

would be a downer, hence ill hold onto the old chip for a few days. The move hasn't cost me much, William hill paid for it.:D
