Intel Haswell Refresh Processors Codenamed Devil’s Canyon – Launching in Mid 2014 With Unlocked Desi

Don't see it this way at all. A newer chipset with updated features and support for 14nm chips isn't a cash grab, neither are improved chips aimed at overclocking. Sure those on 4770K don't need to worry about it, but it's nice for those thinking about upgrading this year from older stuff Sandybridge or older etc. Those guys will get the latest chipset with longevity and even better chips..

Way to much pessimism and negativity here imho. What have AMD done lately? Yet another bunch of rehashed APU's and oh yeah that's right nothing else :D

Good to see Intel making more overclockable chips, but really it's what they should have done in the first place with Haswell. £200+ for an unlocked chip (4770k) with a price premium to allow overclocking, that then doesn't even have a soldered IHS, was taking the **** a bit. I imagine Intel lost a fair few potential sales by releasing a series of chips with not only a small IPC boost but also limited overclocking ability due to temperatures.

It would be better for everyone (well, maybe not Intel) if AMD were more competitive at the higher end.

My 4770K ran @ 4.6Ghz for benching. That was using a standard Antec Kuhler. That's pretty good for a £200+ chip imho.

These new chips are more refined for overclocking. Even better, those on 4770K's don't need to bother, but for those upgrading this year it's great for them. Along with newer chipset, more features and future 14nm support..

X99 for the ultra enthusiast soon..

What's not to like?

Where you at AMD?

All black PCB looks nice:)

Yeah, really nice looking boards those MSI's. Hope Gigabyte have something similar. I only build with Gigabyte mobo's these days.

Read today that the unlocked 'K' chips might not launch until July..

Only non overclocking chips in May. Bit disappointing. If X99 is July as well, that would def be the better upgrade pah imho.

5820K is shaping up to be a beast..

No!!!! Your kidding me? I might have to go 4770k then. I can't wait until july..... damn:(

Heres a thought for you guys, if all haswell refresh CPUs work on both Z87 and Z97 motherboards, and Broadwell is the same pin layout, then surely with a bios update, Broadwell should also work on Z87, do you think we will get this update ?

In theory yes.

Frankly, I wouldn't put bets on Z97 = Broadwell, I wouldn't be surprised (And frankly expecting) if there was a new socket.

I can see people building up for Z97 = Broadwell, and I bet they'll be vocal if there's a new socket, blaming Intel this that and the other.

However, if it does turn of that Broadwell's Z97 and 1150, and doesn't have support for Z87, I'd fine that quite distasteful. But I'm either expecting it to be a new socket, or for it to work on 1150 in its entirety.

I nearly bought the React i7 haswell bundle yesterday, but missed the weekly deal by a few minutes. I'll wait until May to see whether this rears it's head. Annoying as I really need to revamp the PC now!

I'm a little confused...

All this talk about 'Devils Canyon' and Haswell refresh! Are they the same thing as in, haswell refresh is a refresh line of locked non k-series chips, whst devils canyon is the refresh k-series line, or are they entirely unrelated and devils canyon is an enthusiast seperate line of cpu's with better TIM and overclocking potential?

I'm with you on this, it's not been made clear which chips are Devil Canyon and which aren't. I guess like you say the refresh could just be the non K chips. Then the 'K' stuff in July could be Devils Canyon..

Should find out in May..

I would probably be interested in a 4790K (assuming it is z87 compatible) IF it gives a more consistent level of performance in terms of overclocking ability. I wouldn't however pay any more than £100 on top of what I could get for my 4770K. So pricing might rule me out in any case. My 4770K seems like a decent little chip anyway - currently sitting @4.4ghz on Hero's auto overclock settings. Reckon I could tweak it manually and probably get it to 4.6-4.7 if i can find the spare time to mess about with it. For a non delidded chip I am pretty happy with it. But obviously if the newer chips can consistently hit 4.6+ with the golden chips touching 5ghz then it would be worth a look for me!
