On fixed voltage mine doesn't drop down either, balanced power plan though ill need to double check c states. On this board if left in auto they're disabled.

Just found that out. I need to use either offset or adaptive vid.

If I am running 2400Mhz ram in [email protected] volts, what should I be looking at in terms of min&max Cpu cache ratio?
Also, do you have to set Cpu strap or just BCLK frequency?
Just got to grips with the 3930k, now I feel like I am starting all over again.:D
 
You'll only need to increase cache ratio if oc'ing the CPU. Ideally you want it to match cpu multi but it can be tricky to get stable. For better stability its recommend to run 2-3 multis lower than cpu, ie 47x cpu 44x cache. Strap I've never touched tbh.

Cheers mate. Any other settings I need to worry about?

Just how accurate are realtemp and coretemp. I usually like to use HWMonitor, but between that and the other 2, there is about 5-7c difference.

Any way, think it's time for some breakfast. I'd have an Ulster fry, but got no veggie roll. :D

I use coretemp myself, other settings mainly for overclocking are the CPU input voltage, no need to touch initial, just eventual. Also the SA, IOA/D voltages, particularly if you have more than 8gb of ram.

A big fry would indeed be nice, but I'm on a bit of a healthy eating drive at the mo so sadly fry ups are a no go.

I've just ordered one of these to replace my i5 in a Gigabyte Z87-OC board.

When installing, do I just set mobo to optimised defaults, flash bios to latest, and then swap the CPUs?
 
I have taken a few off and resealed them, long laborious job if you want to do it right, the sealant I use is black like the Intel stuff just about as rubbery and difficult for me to get hold of a friend gets it for me no idea what it is other than if you get it on you it won't come off with anything I have seen you have to wait a couple of hours and peel it off, if you get it on your cloths they are for the bin.

But setting it in the right position and then making sure the lid is touching the die is the next hurdle, I had a jig made which allows me to put it into a vice to hold it whilst it sets.

Also the actual deliding don't use the hammer and wood that is sacrilege to me again a friend made me some aluminium jaws for my vice with cut outs to hold the CPU whilst taking it off.

I reckon it takes me 3-4 hours to do one, one of them I couldn't get the top to sit properly took me 4 goes!!!

Worth it though around 20c drop I got on most of them, sick as a pig as the drive I kept all my pics and benchmarks died I lost a few years of info.

Don't forget if you do it there is a possibility of CPU death and for sure when you want to sell it the price is less around £20-£30 less I think.
 
Reseal it with the intel glue thats on the ihs if you dont want to remove it. The pressure of the waterblock/cooler will stick it back in place. Ocuk done this with the 4770k's they sold as part of the extreme clocked bundles. Still runs way cooler than a standard chip. It can only be that the new substance used for connecting the heatspreader to the chip is cheaper but come on. When it affects temperatures so much on chips that already suffer from really high temperature increases with voltage bumps, you really should spend the extra quid and use the older, superior method - for unlocked CPUs at least.
 
Dont do it late at night and when drunk like I did once = dead cpu.

Me too, did one whilst my guildmates were nagging me to hurry up and get online for the wow raid, took me many hours with the soldering iron fixing it.

Beer+rush+brand new CPU aint a good mixture.

Then I notice the vcore that defaults have set:

4ghz @ 1.36v
4.4ghz boost @ 1.42v

WTF!

Any ideas why the defaults are trying to kill my chip?
