OK I am upgrading from an i7 4770K
I like the Ryzen 5950, but would I be better sticking to intel and what is the equivalent?
Around £500 budget

If you are thinking of going with Ryzen after using an intel system just make sure you do some research on appropriate cooling because the Ryzen 5000 series can run very warm, also the 5950X is around £750 so it is out of your budget but the Intel i9 10900K / i9 10900X are in your ball park.

OCUK has the 5900X which is pretty good VFM right now at £450 and would be my choice for the high end, Intel on the other hand offer better value at the budget end with CPUs like the 11400F going for just £150 but wouldn't touch the 11th gen high end stuff over ryzen.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £458.69 (includes shipping: £8.70)

For gaming there's no neeed for 16 core CPU even if you have web browser etc open on background.
12 core 5900X has good reserve for handling that.

Unless manually changing settings Ryzens max at 140W of heat.
While already 8 core Intels can push out 200W of heat.

my 5900x maxes out at 63c on multi and single core workloads, on multi workload cpu uses 133watts , If I set PBO limits to motherboard the multi work load increases to 83c and CPU uses 208watts I do get better benchmarks for multi but for me it isnt worth it when im already above stock benchmarks with playing with the curve optimizer in gaming its constantly 4900-5000 depending on the game its around 50c-63c

I do use 360mm AIO and only have fans max out around 900-1000rpm

Should be no case for so called high end 11th gen when the 5900x is priced so well

There is no Intel equivalent for £500. :)

If you're wanting to spend £500 on a CPU you should be looking at the 5900X, 12 cores 24 threads, the best Intel can do is 10 cores 20 threads for £580 and those cores are slower than the cores in the Ryzen 5900X, in productivity, in gaming, in anything....

What Jigger said, there is just no point to Intel at all now, at least not in the mid and high end.

If you have the choice for Ryzen or Intel, go with Ryzen. Theyve been doing really good stuff recently

After some researching, I went Ryzen with my build.

Upgraded in Feb 2021, from a 3770k set up. So a recommendation for Ryzen for me.

What exactly are you talking about?
I've an AiO and virtually never see above 70 degrees under full load on my 5900x.
I am sure an aircooler could provide similar perf, and the intel burn almost 50% more watts, thus will need significantly higher rate of cooling.

The 5800X tends to run hot when under high all core load, its tuned for a higher all core frequency than the 5600X, 5900X and 5950X, all core it runs at about 4.7Ghz in Cinebench where as the other 3 only run at about 4.3Ghz all core.

Its just the way the 5800X is, its seems to be the one where AMD have said "this one is all balls to the wall, because reasons" trouble with that is it runs much hotter than the other 3.

I think maybe @Loxa is tarring them all with the 5800X brush.

Its not a problem anyway, the 5800X is just not the right CPU for people who just want to plug it in and play and expect cool temps without doing anything to it, if you want that get one of the other 3, however with a bit of tweaking the 5800X can run less hot and still boost to 4.7Ghz all core and <5Ghz in games.

5600x, mid range, clear upgrade path in future with 5900 or 5950.

Or wait to see if am4 is about to be dropped then jump on first am5 cpu
Im not sure a 5600X is worth it even with the price being slightly reduced recently, sure you can upgrade it to a 5900X in a few years time but you'll still likely end up spending as much had you just gone with a 5900X in the first place.

I went for intel for my recent build, 9700k and I wish I went with Ryzen. This CPU is so hot and has no overclocking headroom. No upgrade path either
Whats your idle temps? I upgraded from an I7 950 to a I7 9700K a year and a half ago.

CPU idles at 35C at the moment with a room temp of 26C.

Runs as long as 30C and cooled by an 240m AIO with 2 x redox fans, I have not tried any overclocking as its not been needed.

Agree on the limited cpu upgrade path, my other PC has a 3600 at stock

46 degrees at idle with 20 degree temperature room. I do have my gpu radiator on the front of my case so it will at least be as hot as that. CPU is cooled by noctua nh-d14

EDIT: I'm sure it was hot before I got the AIO though as I never overclocked it because of it
