Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

Ugh, I really want to upgrade to something, I don't care what as long as it's faster by at least 15/20% I've been on this chip for a lifetime and nothing has come out with a big enough jump for gaming.

Wait for the 8700K then, if the chips can reach 5Ghz on a good air cooler/aio then it should be a pretty decent upgrade over your 5930K.

Is 6 cores enough these days for gaming?, I mean - 6 cores are main stream now being supported by beta games like PUBG and lots of other AAA titles, I'm itching to upgrade from my [email protected] but want it to last me another 3/4 years like this chip has. 6 cores to me feels so 2013, I only game but I'm feeling like it should be 10+ for top end gaming in 2017? When I got my 5930k big titles just started supporting 4 cores and there wasn't many.

That's the thing. I've always gone with core count when possible and its always paid off. Q6600 held up long after the 5Ghz wolfdale, even with a massive difference in clock speed.

In think for most people that have been sitting on i5 and i7 quad cores for years and didn't go X79, X99 or AM4 the 8700K will be a decent upgrade, but the really big downside is Z370 ie a knee jurk reaction and AM4 is a better place to be.

@jigger A counter to your example would be the 6 core Phenom II CPUs and the '8' core Bulldozers, more cores isn't always going to pay off in the long term.

And Intel can't just release a platform as a knee jerk reaction, Coffee Lake has been in the works for probably close to 5 years (design to market). Intel's only reaction to AMD will be pricing and possibly an architectural change that will come years later.

Intel shouldnt have but they did. Unless Intels strategy is to replace the Z chipset every 6 months and work in planned obsolescence to the CPU's. Also the FX8 cores have gained performance. The thing that hamstrings the FX8 is it's floating point capability.

The CPU market has seen an up turn in sales and Z370 is a short term way for Intel to take a slice of that extra steam of cash.

The FX 8 cores are still absolute garbage, something that can't be said about Sandy chips that released at the same time.
You don't just need many cores for future proofing, you also need good IPC.

Aye. And if haswell IPC with low clockspeed is good enough for you then ryzen will do fine.
There are many people that want more though, and this will suffice for many.

I've only very recently upgraded X58 6 core systems. X58 seen off every Intel i7 quad core between 2008 and 2017. If Ryzen hadn't been released I think the X58 systems would have seen off the Intel quad core line till 2020 WHEN we get the next true generational TIC!

Oh yeah the FX8 missed the mark by a long way, but you can't argue the point that cores don't matter because that chip didn't scale as well over time as others. That's just plain silly.

Same from my 5820k, but basically no point yet.. Wait for Ice Lake or Zen 2 at least IMO, Ice Lake might actually bring decent gains, but who knows. At least they are upping the core count to 8, that's enough for me to not need to go HEDT again.

I've been waiting for the next best cpu for 18 months now :p, the advise has always been "wait", I know it's pointless changing board and cpu for a side step but I've not had this long a wait on the CPU for something decent to come out since my Q6600 days.

Buy an Xbox Scorpio and import a korean 50" 4k FreeSync monitor. Come back in 2020 or when Zen+ is out.

i7-980X gets deatroyed by i7-2600K in almost every game I played.
