Intel to launch 6 core Coffee Lake-S CPUs & Z370 chipset 5 October 2017

Possible due to Kaby Lake Pentiums being 2c/4t but I still wouldn't bet on it.

I dunno, if they're changing the i5 and i7 to higher core counts then it makes sense to up the i3 slightly.

so it would be

Pentium 2/4
i3 4/4
i5 6/6
i7 6/12

all speculation of course, but I'm sure Intel are away the Pentium is killing their own i3 sales.

I still do not know why Intel have hung onto Pentium, the name was originally derived to avoid them using 586 as the next processor to the 486 and allow them a trademarked name. Other companies used 586 or similar.

Logically they should have used core i1 (like BMW 1 series). :D

There are normally a few Core i5 models to choose from though, as far as we know only one top-end 6c/6t part is being released. I can't see them renaming their entire current line-up to fit...although I can see them just leaving it as it is and upping the confusion even more.

Ah the good old days where i3 = 2c/4t, i5 = 4c/4t, i7 = 4c/8t, and i7-X = 6c/12t. So simple.

Wait, there's going to be a quad core version of Coffee Lake-S? Seems odd considering it has no IPC increase, unless they've managed to push the clocks (and the power usage) up even more than with Kaby Lake? Other option is to actually make i7-7700K EOL and replace it with a cheaper i7-8700K, giving the hex core i7-8760K (or whatever it'll be called) a more comfortable price range to sit in between the i7-8700K and the i7-7800X.

That is an interesting question, which, I'm afraid, may not be answered until nearer the end of this year? i7-8760K, I like that name (who cares lol) :D

Just look at the mobile chips, where Intel have i3, i5 and i7 models all with 2c/4t. The moniker is used solely for price segmentation, which now seems to be their aim in the desktop market too.

Yep, got to agree. We all knew where we stood and what we were paying for. Now it's just utter confusion.
I came to being on on my current platform from years and years of being on X58. The reason i changed was i wanted something to test me clocking wise and a new platform. I have got both now, especially clocking wise lol. The thing is though even clocked lower than my X58 at 5ghz................Ryzen is faster than in all the everyday things by a long way. So i fully intend to stick with it for a long time to come.

I really wish Intel would let us know if coffeelake is releasing this year or not? If not I might go x299 instead, Just need some info intel. Rumours and hearsay are not definite information. All there doing is just confusing everyone even more?

Don't know if those slides are true? I'll try to wait it out until Aug.

They were photographed at an official presentation! Other than the Intel CEO coming to your house for tea and a chat it doesn't get better than this ;) You'll be fine come August! Where waiting is concerned, it's easy; simply wait and don't buy anything else - it really is that simple :)

The chance of intel releasing information early on coffelake is dependent on how well X299 sells and how well threadripper competes.
If x299 is selling well and/or threadripper isn't competitve don't expect any information till a month or two before release (It might even get pushed back).
If x299 doesn't sell well and/or threadripper is really competitive, then expect "leaks" to come in thick and fast.

It's mainstream, has got nothing to do with HEDT. Also, it currently is two months before release ;) and leaks have been coming in plentiful.

Usually you would be correct about mainstream having nothing to do with HEDT, but with the release of a 6c/12t part, it will have a definite affect on the lower end of intels HEDT platform. just look at the person I quoted sitting on the fence between HEDT and mainstream, and i doubt he's alone.
Also the post I quoted seemed unsure if it was coming out this year. Has it been confirmed to be coming out in August? My quick google search only got my 2H 2017 (a.k.a Q4 2017) and a few rumors of August. I'm seriously doubting whether intel can simply slash 6 months from its development cycle at a whim, without consequences of some sort.

Meant AMD HEDT, sorry.

Yes, the slides I mentioned a few times previously, corroborated by the SiSoftSandra and other entries. I can understand any skepticism!

Doubts should be easy enough to solve for Simon or anyone else. Simon, what sort of user are you? HEDT for the prosumer and mainstream for the gamer, casual streamer and above average user. Especially for gaming the reliable lower L2 and higher L3 caches and ring bus are beneficial.

The performance of threadripper and price (forgot about that) will affect the effective lifecycle of X299, which has a knock on affect on there product stack due to reason i mentioned previously.

Your thinking about it from the wrong perspective. Intel wants as much money as possible. It is Intel's best interest to have people like him (who are sitting on the fence) to become impatient and buy into the X299 platform. Heck who knows a maybe later on they will still end up buying a coffee lake system as well. Win Win as far as Intel is concerned. For this reason, they will not want to release to much information as it could potentially cause harm to the sales of X299.
