** iOS 8 **

It's the £100 fee which apple charge to gain access to developer tools which aren't too appealing for newcomers

But I think people will do some really great things with the new APIs
Finally letting devs have a bit more free rein

Unless something has changed, the developer tools are free.

You only have to pony up the $99 fee if you want to submit an app to the app store.

This is such a huge update. They're finally starting to open up the 'walled garden' a bit and add in more features and customisation - not massive amounts, but it's a start.

I think iOS 8, matched with the new large screen iPhone 6, could be a clean sweep of the high end phone market, potentially.
I haven't seen what they touted of photo management as I tuned out during the show last night towards the end.

The only thing keeping me to android tbh is its proper/superior ability to let ME manage my photos the way I want. I absolutely hate iOS's gallery and the fact that I can't organise my images. If they ever fix that I'll be back to ios fast.

Overall its great to see ios getting all these new toys, and so many api's being available to developers.

Yeah its $99 only needed when deploying to a device(or workaround via jailbreak) or submitting to the App Store.

I still don't think apps are slow. Well not well written ones. 30% faster sounds a bit optimistic but I'm willing to give it a shot.

How is it?
Not really. iPad 2 running iOS 7.1 is as fast as iOS 6.
It is fair to say that IOS 8 will make your iPad 2 sluggish. I certainly knew IOS7 would make my iPad 3 sluggish (i.e bringing up the task manager is v.slow & laggy) and it did. IOS 8 will be packing more background services than ever and I'd be very hesitant to install it on either of our two devices.

It may feel just as fast but iOS 7 uses a hell of a lot more system memory than iOS 6 does, which means less multitasking before the OS starts asking backgrounded apps to relinquish resources to free up memory for foreground tasks.

How is it?

Not really any different to 7.1. Does feel faster, however it was full up before so that may be a reason. Looks exactly the same, tbh I have hardly noticed any differences so far apart from the contacts displaying when you double click. the white keyboard doesn't display when a button has been pressed (the black one does) but you still get a sound. Ill keep posted about the battery life

Just managed to install iOS 8 on my iPhone 5

Most of the features are a bit mehh if i'm honest/ Great to have them but not much stand out awesome just yet.
One thing I am finding most useful though is cross application integration
This is a great example of how useful this could be:

True. I did disable Background App Refresh to improve performance.

iPad 2 and up

Best thing ever!
iPhone on my bedside table and I just say "hey Siri set an alarm for 5:45" (depressing I know)
And voila!
No touching nothing. It is brilliant!

Didn't you get the memo? The alarm is broken :p

EDIT: Created a new alarm last night to use for this morning and that has worked.
