Had a look myself today. Really frustrated.
The physical device itself is everything a small tablet should be. It is a joy to hold, it is ultra thin, it's light and it's nicely built. Perfection. Absolutely what I want in a tablet.
But...
The screen aspect ratio seems very poor for watching video - I tested a movie trailer and had more of the screen being used for black bars than I did for the actual video. Why do they insist on the 4:3 aspect ratio? Surely its a device thats going to be used for watching video, almost all of which is at least 16:9 these days? Very very frustrating.
The rest of the screen seemed ok - it's a shame its not higher res but browsing the web was fine.
The other criticisms I see no point in going back over as everyone knows the storage space is woeful and the prices charged for more space outrageous.
Real dilemma - I want one, but I feel it'll be frustrating for what I want to use it for. Grrrr.
Objectively speaking it would seem that almost every other tablet out there - certainly the Nexus 7 - is basically better. Better screen resolution, better CPU, better storage options, better pricing and a far better aspect ratio for multimedia. The Nexus 7 is on paper the ideal tablet and makes the iPad Mini look like a joke.
But then you hold the Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini back to back
The choice then comes down to a beautifully built, wonderful to hold yet functionally compromised tablet, or a well specified, functionally excellent, better value tablet that feels like a cheap toy.
I'm not sure I want either of those things. I want a well specified, functionally excellent and beautifully built 8" tab.
It would seem such a thing doesn't exist and I was dearly hoping the iPad mini would be it.
