iPad Mini...

I totally prefer the aspect ratio of the mini over the nexus but then again, I don't intend to use it for movies.

That's understandable. Surely if that's the case the Nexus 7 is perfect?

The extortionate price of memory on the iPads would be a major turn off if i needed memory on one.

I admit it does feel really nice to use. Only gripe with the build is the buttons feel a bit cheap. They aren't very solid and can be wiggled a little bit. This is being very pannickety though.

That doesn't really make sense though - portrait 4:3 is far more suited to browsing webpages and reading books/magazines than 16:9 will ever be. That's the primary purpose of an iPad... not watching movies.

It makes perfect sense as I watch a lot of media on the move. I'm completely used to browsing the web in 16:9 as I do so on my desktop.

Played with one of these on Saturday, much prefer it to the full sized iPad and seriously considering getting one once they go retina and have a bonded screen, the glare on these are pretty bad in comparison to the iPhone 5

watched a film on the mini last night.

so light and easy to hold. confirmed my purchase even more.

although its not retina it doesnt bother me in the slightest. unless i zoom in really far and look incredibly close then i cant tell the difference and to be honest id never hold my ipad to that degree anyways.

Much to my dislike I'll probably be throwing loads of money Apple's way this Christmas, the missus wants one of these and we're thinking of getting one for her dad as he'll be on the road a lot for his new job, and with the addition of Facetime 3G he'll be able to FT home and her (she lives here, they're in the states)

Kinda undecided as to whether or not I should get my mum one though, as she wants a tablet, I was thinking a Nexus 7, but the fact that Sky are absolute failures at supporting Android this is kind of a turn off for me and would render the device kinda useless for her purposes...

hhmm, I'm not sure I follow this logic. If the mini was 16:9 it would either have to be wider, so no longer an 8" tablet, or thinner, in which case you would have exactly the same amount of actual visible screen?

I watch a lot of movies on my iPad3 and the bars aren't an issue at all (my wife on the other hand makes it full screen ugh!). Is the mini that much smaller?

Well, I just had a play with one at the Apple Store and I'm sorely tempted now.

The weight of the thing surprised me most, my iPad 2 now feels like a brick in comparison. It's literally half the weight (601g vs 308g), which surprised me as in hand it felt a similar weight to my 4S (140g). There's a big plus for reading in bed :)

The screen. I've never used a retina iPad, so as a direct comparison to the iPad 2 the higher density is a winner. Type looked just as good, pictures looked just as good, and the smaller tap targets aren't a problem for someone who's had iPhones forever.

Like I say, I'm sorely tempted :)

For a non-Apple afficionado, can someone explain what a bonded screen is?

It's where all layers of a screen are in 1 single unit. At the moment the screen is a digitiser and the actual LCD display. A bonded screen looks nicer as the pixels are closer to the surface. Less reflections caused by rebounding light between the layers.

Since using the Mini since friday morning and not seeing another iPad until this morning I'm surprised how big normal iPads looks now.

Definitely cemented my purchase for me. I don't care about the retina anymore. It's not adding any more real estate so it's just there to look pretty. The iPad Mini's screen is fine and I just LOVE the form factor.

It's very weird the reception you get with the Mini. It seems like a love or hate it device. Some just don't understand the need for it and others have been waiting for this since the first.

can someone please do some iPad mini screenshots of the following:

home screen
safari running BBC news website and Apple store website

you can upload them via http://upit.me/

Thanks :D
