iPad Mini...

Problem is it's not just the resolution, it's a combination of that and the screen size. Add "retina" 2048x1536 to a 7.8" display and you need to scale a lot of the text/icons/buttons up or you're just going to have a LOT of people squinting because they can't actually read it. In which case you basically need a sixth "resolution" that app developers need to develop for.

The text will scale to the same visible size as it is now. Graphics will just be twice as detailed. Nothing is getting smaller on screen

Never used skype before?
They've been using Skype for years but their family in Australia (children) all have Apple devices and won't use Skype because its 'old'.

We originally bought them a Kindle Fire HD but had to return it because they wanted to use FaceTime.

I had jokingly commented that I wanted an iPad Mini to my parents, but didn't expect one as they usually spend more on my daughter.. So when I saw the iPad Mini (last present opened ftw!) I was blown away.

Coming from an iPad1 probably taints my experience, but it feels snappy and the battery lasts an age :)

Bonus feature now being I have a second charger for my iPhone 5 too.

My wife got a mini for Christmas, I got a nexus 7 and already had a iPad 4 so I'm in a good position to comment!

Firstly I've read allot about the supposedly poor screen of the mini, this is simply untrue the screen quality is great and far better than the nexus 7 and really not that much worse than a retina iPad.

Screen Size, I feel the mini might be the perfect size, browsing is just as comfortable on the mini as on the iPad 4 and if if the specs get bumped up to its bigger brothers then I'll be switching next upgrade. However for true portability the Nexus 7 wins here, I can literally fit the nexus in a pocket.

Physical size, To look at all three devices side by side I would say there's a bigger difference between the mini and nexus than there is between the mini and iPad 4. Because of the size and cost of iPads I'd say they aren't truly portable take anywhere devices and this is why I bought a nexus as well!

My wife is over the moon with her mini and if I'm a honest I'm a little disappointed with the screen quality of the nexus after being spoilt by a iPad 4 and Galaxy S3, it's no where near as good as the mini's either. But at least it fits in my pocket, offers allot of power and I won't worry as much if I lose or break it!

Was bought my mini as a present and have loved it since i opened it, would like a retina display on it. Price however is too much i think, the nexus 7 packs an awful lot of punch for £100 cheaper. It is a nice product and i do love using it.

Good point, me being stupid...

I do wonder if the tech is around at the moment (at a reasonable cost) for that type of screen. The same reason the 720p screens only became available before moving to smaller screens a few months later. They may not have been able to get a "retina" screen that small when the mini first came out, it may be possible in future. On the other hand is there any need?

Any chance of pictures from the top and side (to see screen size and thickness)?

Especially as the australian family appear to love their family so much they can't use skype and force someone to get an Apple device....!

For me it is a lot less sharp in comparison to the iPad retina screen, straight away I noticed. As I knew it is a less sharp screen thought it might be my mind playing tricks on me so showed my wife, didn't mention the screen and just told her to have a play about and first thing she said was how come the screen is a bit fuzzy!

Otherwise I do really like the device, as usual great build quality and the size and weight imo is spot on.

a Ipad mini will prob be my first iDevice (going to the dark side) but hard to justify the price over the nexus7. If it wasn't for the fact that my works primary development platform is iOS and not android I wouldn't be thinking so much about what to get a nexus 7 32gb or a ipad mini.

Might wait till the iPad mini II so it has abit more hardware and a better display. Im hearing march on that front which would suite me well as my birthday is then.

Yes I'm more of a android man but thanks to work I get to use 99% of the latest android and iOS devices sometimes pre-release on the android front

I have had my Ipad Mini since yesterday, I haven't used iOS since I sold my Iphone 2G four years ago. It stills seems easy to use but doesn't have the depth of Android, but the iPad experience is all about apps and iOS does have the best range of apps and they are more polished than Android apps.
I had a nexus 7 for a couple of months and have now sold it to a work colleague when I found out my dad had got me an Ipad Mini. The Nexus has the better processor and screen resolution but the Ipad feels a more premium product, and home sharing feature is useful.

So far 8.5 out of 10, first impressions are good.

any one recommend a nice case and stand? thanks

loving my ipad mini very handy!

I am using a jammy lizard case from the rainforest shop, cost just under £10, does the job well. My dad has a Griffin case that cost £25 from an Apple approved reseller, both cases do the job - not sure the griffin case is worth £15 more though.

Saw the mini go on sale on boxing day for £240 hesitated now it's back to £260 and slightly regreting it. Not sure why I seem to think I can get it for 20% off RRP....

Yes if your used to a retina screen the mini display is not up to scratch.

Otherwise it is fine.

I'm used to one and I was actually surprised how good the screen on the mini was, it's not even nearly as bad as some people suggest.

Overall the device seems excellent.

Does the jammy lizard one offer good protection? I am looking for one that will take a few knocks.
