iPad Mini...

The official mini smart cover is £35, is it worth paying this much for one? Seems like a lot to me for a simple cover, are their any better ones to get for the same price?

Cheers

I was looking for a case yesterday and they are all in that price region. The annoying thing with the Smart Cover is it is just that... A cover for the screen... It isn't a smart case (which apple do for the big iPad and it protects the back as well). All the cases I saw it town were very bulky, quite heavy, and were poorly made... I'm thinking of just getting a pouch to slip it in and then I can chuck it in a bag with out worry but still use it as it was designed.

That's what I've done with all of my iPhones. I've never had a screen protector or bumpers or shell case, I've just used a Crumpler leather sleeve.

this is the case i have on mine. very good quality and cheap also.

I can assure you that the mini has a higher ppi than your desktop monitor, for example a 24" monitor @ 1920x1080p only has a ppi of 91.79, compared with the mini's ppi of 162.03, we stare at our monitors all day with extremely low ppi and don't even think twice about it, yet we don't see people refusing to buy monitors because they aren't 'retina'.

I honestly think people have become obsessed with this Apple invented buzzword.

I can tell the difference between the ipad and ipad mini screen the moment i pick one up. Any monitors about at a comparible price that have a much higher ppi than a 24" at 1920*1080?

I think I'm going to go the sleeve route also, I just popped around town also and nothing really took my fancy, a big appeal of the mini is the form factor, it seems counter-intuitive to use it in a bulky case.

I suppose the only downside to not using a smart cover or case is that you need a separate stand if you want to prop it up and watch a film.

Well yeah that's because I'm 3-4 times the distance from my eyes on my 24 inch monitor than I am when sitting holding my Ipad. I just measured, most of the time my eyes are a 10-12 inches or less when sitting in my chair head looking down Ipad in lap. When I use my monitor I'm 32 inches from the screen.

I had Smart Cover on ipad2 and it always left like dusty white streaks on the screen, there are loads better covers and cases out there for the money

I'm stuck on deciding which case to get now then... I've got a cheap case coming from Amazon that covers the back, it has lots of high ratings so should be decent however I want something that covers the front as well.

To get the Smart Cover or not? Hmm...

This is the one I have, got it from Lewis'es have the cover is ridged so it also acts as stand

As anyone got a gap around the bezel of there iPad mini? Not worried about mine, only thing that would concern me if dirt starts getting trapped under the screen in the future? Dust is starting to get trapped in the side of it. I can also see the glue in the gap. Weird!

Well, my Mini arrived with some blue plastic between the screen and bezel at the lower right corner. I took it out... seemed like poor QC.

Then I started examining the Mini closely and there was a roughness when running my finger across the bezel ... like it was not closely joined.

So I sent mine back.

I checked out some other Minis in the store and none had as smooth a join between screen and bezel as the Ipad 4. I think it is just being quickly made to meet demand and QC is falling short.

Yeah I checked out some display models as well and there seemed to be a gap in all of them. It's not really a big deal though in my opinion, it doesn't effect how the ipad performs or works so its no biggie for me.

One other thing I've noticed on mine is a small scuff mark on the home button that's only visible in the light, no idea how that got there though as I've been very careful with it.

Also it would be nice if the home button didn't collect as much dust around the edges !
