iPad2 opinions?

There is no "killer feature" that makes me want to upgrade, some interesting stuff coming out under Android 3.0, Ipad 2 might find itself being "leapfrogged" by the competition.

I think the screen is identical but obviously do not know for sure.

I agree with the smart cover comments, very nifty and indeed smart but still the back in vulnerable, my back was cleverly scratched to hell when I once put it in my bag with no case on, learnt my lesson obviously! but you'll still need another case to protect t he back in transit or similair situations.

I originally planned to wait for the announcement, see the spec and then sell my 16gb wifi. Since they dropped the price of the original from 429 to 329 straight away I either lose £80/90 odd quid or stick with what I have. Shame they didnt drop the price in a week or two instead :(

The new dual core is a big selling point for me aswell as the improved gfx speed. I wonder if they have sorted the voltage output on the dock connector to allow better use of accessories?

The 'Smart Cover' is just a fancy screen cover that integrates a nifty stand, its not designed to protect the iPad really.

It's also a clever way by Apple to make a few quid before any one else gets their cases out. If I got an iPad 2, a third-party Smart Cover with a more interesting cover (and material in between the poly and leather price points) would be sufficient for home, but if I was taking it out I'd go with something that was like a smart cover on the front and covered the rest of the thing up as well.

Looks more like iPad 1.2.
New Android 3.0 tablets have better specs, seems they have leap frogged Apple.
But it's Apple, so specs don't matter.
How do you work that one out? The GPU specs alone in the Ipad are more then triple the speed of the Android 3.0 tablets. The Just look at all the problems the Android 3.0 tablets have with some HD videos that the Ipad2 can play with ease.

Put it another way from a GPU point of view the Android 3.0 tablets are 10% faster than the Ipad 1. The Ipad 2 is x9 faster. Android 3.0 tabs have far worse specs.

Why would anyone want an Android 3.0 with last generation GPU technology?

I like Apple products but I hate all the needless hyperbole their marketing department always spouts. Hearing them talk about the "revolution" that the iPad 2 is grinds my gears.

It's the same thing, with faster hardware, a new chassis and two cameras. Whoop-de-doop. If they'd released with iOS5, then fair enough, but this is plainly a catch up release, designed to secure market share and it isn't innovative in the slightest. The cover is about the most original part of the iPad 2... so that's where all their R+D spending went then?

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a great product, but I already have an iPhone and I don't need a bigger version thanks. Honeycomb, meanwhile, looks far more promising with a wide range of devices to choose from and an OS that hasn't just been lifted from a phone.

Looks good to me. If I had an iPad I don't think I'd consider upgrading, but for a non-tablet owner it looks ideal for sofa surfing (which is a royal PITA with an iPhone 4 due to the small screen). The instant-on, lack of bulk and no worries about perching a hot running laptop on your knees makes it a far better option for the sofa than a laptop too).

Tegra 2 is last generation? what planet are you on?

Even the first Galaxy S Tab's GPU is allot more than 10% faster than the iPad, I know you talk BS but this is taking it to te extreme.

Seriously, I want benchmarks proving that it's 9x faster otherwise it's just marketing BS.

^Here you go... (not the iPad 2, but a similar SoC) The 1st gen GeForce ULV is a little slower than the SGX540 in the Nexus S (for tile rendering optimised games) The SGX543MP2 is cooking! can't wait for the SGX543MP4 :p

The HD "problem" is none existent, just of numpties wanting to watch blueray rips, 1080p baseline is more than good enough. (the iPad 2 only supports 720p baseline btw)

A huge advantage for tegra 2 is the current support for flash GPU acceleration, it makes a big difference if the OS supports it. ;) (SGX gpus should get Adobe support with icecream?)

Tegra 2 is certainly not 'last generation'

Since this thread asks for an opinion im going to give it.

This isnt an iPad 2.0. Its an iPad 1.5. Its just playing catch-up and not so well in some areas.

An iPad iOS designed especially for the iPad would have been better- like Honeycomb. The current iOS is dated! I like how honeycomb has widgets on your homescreen so you can see all your important stuff at first glance and with proper multi-tasking..

Im glad i sold my iPad when i did. Was a waste of money.

And is the iPad 2.0 GPU 9x faster than say the Xoom? That looks like marketing BS......

What did i say about playing catchup and not doing it well......

http://xsellize.com/topic/119010-just-how-bad-is-the-ipad-2-camera/

"Still, for a device that costs a minimum of $500, it would be nice to have a better image sensor, rather than these bottom-of-the-barrel ones Apple insists on using. Will we ever get one? It's starting to look rather doubtful"

And thats from a hardcore Apple enthusiast forum (so dont accuse me of being anti-apple!)

I'm still waiting for benchmarks, the SGX540 in the Nexus S is not faster than Tegra 2, anandtech benchmarks below.

The SGX540 in the new LG Optimus 3D however is but it's rumoured to be clocked at 300MHz instead of 200MHz in the Nexus S.

^ Yep, the title should read.. "Samsung planned on selling 10" tab for £800, wakes up in time" :p There's nowt wrong with it.

I did say for heavy tile rendering/textures :) (quake 3 etc)

Overall they're quite similar (where a resolution change will have greater impact on fps?) I'm not bashing the GeForce ULV at all, it's a good attempt considering the speed it came to market (and it's desktop shader heritage)

The 9x times faster than the SGX535?

Improved architecture, new drivers, ~300GHz overclock?, extra bandwidth, extra cpu core and the extra gpu core. That doesn't sound far fetched to me.

And is the iPad 2.0 GPU 9x faster than say the Xoom? That looks like marketing BS......

As above, they're comparing it to the SGX535 in the original iPad (which is much slower than the GeForce ULV in the Xoom)

The iPad 2 has actually got great specs (the best around atm*), the camera/memory/res? is just a natural upgrade path left for the iPad 3. Probably in before the cortex A15 gen, can't blame them either.

*Not including more complex multitasking, the biggest disappointment is no tablet specific OS overhaul, not the hardware.
