iPhone 2.0 firmware available now

Just restored for the 3rd or 4th time in the hope of getting typing to work as it should. Seems ironic that I've had more problems with this legit firmware than any of the previous jailbroken ones!

Probabily a silly question to those that have been following the 2.0 firmware, but at the moment i'm on 1.1.4 (Ziphone'd) that runs fine. Now as i understand it, if i do the upgrade to 2.0 officially via itunes, then i will not be able to use the phone feature of my phone.

My question is: can i try the upgrade and still use it to download apps from the app store, even if the phone wont work. I remember the day i got it and if it wasnt registered yet, you couldnt even use it as a device or anything until it was A: Registered, or B:Jailbroken.

Hope you understand what i mean by that. :)

Where do you get the idea that you won't be able to use the phone as a phone? Haven't heard anything of the sort, and it's definitely not the case with mine!

With the new firmware, it seems Apple/O2 are allowing activations without the contract - similar to the new 3G handsets that are permitted for use on PAYG. As long as you have an o2 sim, the phone will activate, if you haven't, then it won't, and you won't be able to use the phone at all.

Heh, yeah, I thought of that after I wrote the first line! What confused me was the idea that just the phone part would be disabled, as far as I'm aware, it's all-or-nothing.

Yeah i did forget to mention that i am on an Orange PAYG at the moment, although the credit is all out, so i dont mind upgrading to 2.0 and not using the phone part of the device, but like you mentioned, i dont believe it will work. :o

No, you won't be able to activate (and hence us it at all) without having an O2 SIM. If it were me, I'd be getting an O2 PAYG sim card to use the thing properly!

I forgot to mention this last night but yesterday I got a rough idea of how poor 2.0 is in its current state on my 1gb touch.

Every morning I would leave my house with my jailbroken touch and full battery and at work leave the touch in sleep mode. Intelliscreen is the only background app that regularly updates itself with notifications of my newest emails/calendar events. At the end of the day the battery meter would be just over the halfway point, or at 76% according to a third party battery app.

Yesterday was my first day with 2.0 at work with no intelliscreen app (doesn't abide by daft apple rules) so I had Push up and running instead. As I left the office I noticed the battery meter at less than half full (around an estimated 35%). Shocking.

Yes the 'test' above isn't a thorough one but my daily usage remained the same. Even worse was to come during music playback. If I hit the sleep button the music stutters horribly for a few seconds - sounds like a huge cpu hit for those few seconds to me. Urgh, giv 1.14 back plz :(

That sucks Kainz, but on the upside it might point to the poor power usage on my 3G iphone is a firmware issue, so hopefully can be fixed :)

Thanks for that, glad i haven't upgraded my touch! This 2.0 firmware feels very Beta to me.

A thought I had last night for us now-legit 2G owners. Now that it seems o2 are allowing the use of PAYG SIMs, does that mean there's a way for us to get visual voicemail? It's something I wouldn't mind using.

And another point. now apple are allowing 2g phones to be used as PAYG does that mean warranty issues will be easier to get resolved now ?

I believe that visual voicemail is still only available for true iPhone contracts
