iPhone 2.1 Software

Guys everytime I load up itunes it comes up with the message itunes doesn't have the required software installed. please removed and reinstall itunes. I have done this and it doesn't work.
I have searched my HDD for itunes and deleted everything but it still doesn't work after a fresh reboot and install.
Is there a program to trash everything to do with iTunes. I might have to reformat which I really don't want to do as i don't think i've got any installs left on Vista.

Can i ask a very quick question before i FULLY wipe and install 2.1 from 1.1.4....

How will i be able to change my theme ? Or will i be stuck with the standard one ?

Also, how do you install cydia/installer ?

Thank-yoo

Follow the guide I just posted, it will install cydia then you can install winterboard, it backs up your phone anyway so you can restore contacts etc

After a lot of faffing about 2.1 is stable on my 2G and 3G, mail doesn't crash on the 2G after I restored to a default 2.1FW then re-applied the custom so i'm assuming it was the old dir permissions issue ? 2.2 seems to have little new in it from what i've read so but if they're planning a full point release not a minor point release i'm hoping for more than 'the Google search bar being accessible without having to tap the URL bar and the reload button is on it’s own'

Ok my iPhone is now offically messed up (but working...ish)

First EDGE wasn't working
Then the displayed pixels got smaller (like a 5 pixel border around the screen which wasn't there before)
Then iTunes decided my iPhone wasn't my iPhone anymore and wants to restore from a backup.. again.

MESSED!

Oh well

Edit: Oh and I have a nice green stuck pixel in the middle of the screen... :(

Might get a 3G now...

Anyone getting 'the unread message'?

It's constantly saying I have an unread text message but I don't. Seems to be something that a few other people have had fairly recently too.

I've gone back to 1.1.4 now as 2.x just crippled my phone with regards to my car's Parrot BT kit. Made it unusable, literally! Everytime I answered the iPhone (v2.1) the parrot kit muted the input and output.

1.1.4 is definately quicker too.

I still have my 2G kicking about so i've put 2.1 on both and tested it back to back with the 3G. To start with it was slow, after a bit of reading I decided to restore it back to factory defaults and reinstall 2.1 from scratch then built a custom ipsw and restored that onto the vanilla device. The result was a fully clean iphone (perfect as i'm planning on flogging the 2G on a well know auction site.) but most importantly it was quicker. They now both have the same apps on and are both performing pretty much spot on.

May be worth a try ?

Restore to 2.1 offical and unless you need jailbreak, nothing else (as any O2 sim works out of the box now with 2G iPhones)

I'm sure this has been covered already so my apologies in advance, and excuse my ignorance with O2 sims, but I assume when you say 'any' sim, that would include my Dad's pay and go sim? (Is that what Simplicity is?)

What happens with the data part of the phone? When we unlocked and jailbroke 1.1.4, we had to change a config file to allow it to use GPRS as EDGE wasn't available. Does it just 'work' on 2.1?

Sorry again for covering ground that I'm sure has already been covered!

Simplicity is a contract sim that's sim only, you supply the handset, they charge a minimal price for the contract on the basis of them not having to recoup the cost of the phone from the line rental, payg will have different gprs username/pwd iirc so probably very similar to what you had to do with 1.14.

So that means it'll need jailbreaking then?

What's the easiest way for going about that? Running Windows so can't use any Mac utils.

EDIT - Think I should be ok guys, found the following guide:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1880

EDIT - Final quick question. Provided everything goes ok with the above, and we get to 2.1... will the same guide we used for 1.1.4 (http://www.the-iblog.com/2008/03/18/how-to-get-gprs-working-on-an-o2-sim-payg/) work on 2.1? Anyone know?

EDIT - Scratch all that guys lol, ran through it all anyway, and working fine. For those curious, used the above guide to upgrade to 2.1, unlock and jailbreak, then used the guide from The iBlog to load the O2 PAYG settings. One happy pappy.

Can someone just confirm this for me please.

I have an 02 simplicity in a 2G iPhone. I want to update to 2.1 and activate it through iTunes. This should work from what I have read?

Also, if it's pants, can I downgrade to 1.1.4 through iTunes and unlock using Ziphone or is the upgrade to 2.x software irreversible.

Yes. If it's an O2 iPhone.

I think you'd need an old version of iTunes, but it can be done.

How did you downgrade? Was it easy?

I too am tempted oce again to return to 1.1.4 even back to 1.1.2

Think iTunes 7.5 and Downgrading of the baseband is required, simple few clicks involved and a lot of finger crossing

Then run iLiberty+ for the jailbrea and bingo
