How are people defending this? at all?

Fair enough if you don't have a problem phone, or you live in an area and move around in an area with signal so strong that it does not degrade no matter how you to hold it. However, that is not a defence. The fact of the matter is that there is a blatant design flaw here. It applies to enough phones to stop me getting one. It is not like it is isolated and the chance of getting problematic one is low. I tried 3 in the Apple store and they all presented with the same fault).

If you have to change the way you hold the phone then you acknowledge there is a problem but accepted it. I do not accept that, why would anyone accept that? You spend all that money on it, don't you want it to be perfect? We are not talking about something minor here, the phone struggles to make phone calls simply by picking it up! I will not be fob off with "change the way I hold my phone". I will hold it every damn way I feel thank you very much, nor will I accept getting a £25 bumper as a solution. What if I want to use it as it is out of the box? A £10 phone doesn't need to any after thought fix, why should a £600 phone? Frankly, if Apple accept the bumper IS a solution then the consumer does not need to pay for that solution from his own wallet. Even if this can be fixed with the bumper, I am voting with my wallet by not getting it until they fix it. Out of principle.

I like apple stuff, but I hate this phone, and the company is losing respect by the minute.

Did you lose ALL SIGNAL?

No. Like I said, as far as I'm concerned it's been blown up out of proportion.

So because you only make a few calls a month on it you assume other people dont use the iPHONE as a phone like yourself that its not a valid issue?
Wow.. get that job application into Apples PR dept asap.. you'd be snapped up in seconds :p

Probably not he was in the centre of Birmingham which as the second largest city in the country has excellent 3G coverage, had he been somewhere a bit more out of the way then he probably would have done it's not rocket science to work that out!

As for the signal issues, obviously I cant test that as yet, but Im not overly worried due to the fact I rarely make/receive calls, im on the lowest plan. As I think it was Feek that said its just mainly a computer on the move for me.

Yes, but even if you never made phone calls with it, the issue still remains that you still use your phone via Data, which if you have a weak signal is going to be lost just using it how you would the previous iPhones.

Thus your 'computer on the move' may as well be in Airplane mode, you could have got an iPod Touch.

For all you lot who have got iPhones and have some of these issues, I hope Apple does right by you. And by that I mean, I hope enough of you kick up a big enough stink so you MAKE them treat you right. Dont listen to their BS "You're holding the phone wrong". Over half a grand spent on a phone that drops signal if you touch it? Unacceptable.

I can't believe people are defending this.
Mine is in the post due to arrive on Monday but it will be going straight back unopened.
There is no way the cash buying public should be buying into this.
Apple need to recall this and fix it. I have a feeling it will be fixed on future models without recalling all those sold already.
It pays to wait.

The only people I know who don't have the problem are complete Apple zealots, funny that. ;)

I work in a 1 storey building with a cell on the roof and I can replicate the issue inside and outside the building.

I'm left handed, so hold it in my right hand and type with my left hand.

Assume most of you are the opposite so even texting will be worse for you ?

I'm going to stick with it for a while and just see what happens, huge shortages anyway so not like it will get resolved any time soon.

So that either means the people saying they dont have an issue either -

Have a handset that doesn't have the fault?

Are lying?

Dont understand the issue thus are unable to replicate it?

Take your pick folks :p

or D) It has the fault but have not been in a low signal area. People are gettnig it to do it at work but not home and vice versa.

Which store? I was going to try the ones in Clifton shopping centre but I think you've saved me a trip :)

Yup, there. They are sold out (as expected).

I did a few tests against my 3GS, it is a tad quicker in loading things and the screen is lovely but not worth a 3GS owner upgrading!

I was passing by so I might as well see what the fuss is about!

The "ahhh it doesnt do it when im sat here at home with it on my desk" are the best ones

Last i saw it was a MOBILE phone, the worse your signal is as you move around the more chance you have of losing connection altogether,

I am quite surprised by some of the reactions in here. How can anyone possibly say it is not a major issue?

Apple have a phone that could drop your call or Internet connection with the mearest adjustment of your hand/fingers. "Hold it differently". Sure, £500 for a phone you have to think about how you hold in order to ensure it does what you paid £500 for.

If you spent £500 or more on a laptop that lost its WiFi if you touched a certain part of the wrist rest, would you go "oh well, I'll just have to avoid touching that bit"? I doubt it.

What were Apple thinking wen they put the gap there? The top and bottom of an iPhone, in my experience, is rarely touched at all. Could they have not coated the metal in that area in something non-conductive?

Hold it differently or buying a bumper is not an acceptable solution to this kind of oversight on a £500 device. Apple are always banging on about how they "change everything" with their products and no detail is overlooked. How the user experience is paramount. Seems they took a day off when designing the antenna!

I really do want the iPhone 4, as I can see it is a fantastic piece of kit. I just really, really hate the thought of shelling out when it has such a basic flaw. :(

If it was a random secretary then I'd suggest the reply would have been far more diplomatic.

Hilarious zealot is hilarious.

Edit: oh I see you removed the 'obviously a random secretary' bit - not so obvious after all? ;-)

what is hilarious is the involvement by folk in this thread who have not purchased the iPhone 4 and have no intention of doing so, typical BB and Android folk with nothing better to do then to throw about some sarcy comments.

I'm going to test mine when I get home.

I plan on buying one and like many other people I am far from happy with the situation and how Apple have chosen to handle it.

You can feel free to stick your head in the sand and take offense at people being unhappy about this but in reality it is a problem and far from acceptable.

Apple messed up, and when given the chance to fix it, they've gone and riled everyone. Well done Apple :)

Ah! I was slightly confused by your reply :p

So only people who have or intend to buy an iPhone 4 are allowed to post in this thread?
