iPhone... It's been unlocked

If the unlock software proves to be an easy-to-do thing then i might consider buying an iPhone, however it might be too-little-too-late if they're coming out in a few weeks.

Main reason I need an unlocked one is because I have a contract that won't be up for another 12months, and my home broadband is tied to it.

Cancelling it would mean paying the contract provider to terminate early, and I've have to switch ISP :(

I doubt it.

That would require a completely new set of hardware, and it's likely that will come in the next revision :)

It will work with any GSM network.. in other words, yes :)

My understanding of it: You buy the iPhone from either an Apple store or an AT&T store ($499 for 4gb, $599 for 8gb) and then when you connect it to iTunes to activate you choose which price contract/prepay you want to sign up for (and the iPhone cannot do anything until it's activated).

So you need software to bypass activation (but all that does is enable the iPod/Wi-Fi browsing features of the iPhone) [not gonna say anymore details due to forum rules] but it still cant do any phone features - the breakthrough yesterday is that theres another piece of software that enables any networks simcard to be used in the iPhone (which will have been activated already using the hack activation program.)

You can buy an iPhone on ebay.

Just buy one, download the unlocking software and put your own sim in :)
 
Unlock software will end up on bittorrent in no time. America must be the only country where you can't release unlock software without getting sued. :rolleyes: Honestly though, they would have to be idiots not to release the software after spending thousands of hours working on it. Otherwise they have completey wasted their time. Whats the point in making unlock software if your too cowardly to release it?

It's not illegal to unlock a phone, but I think AT&T are going on grounds that they've modified the firmware on the phone (which is illegal), although that's a long shot if the hack is entirely software-based as it doesn't technically change/add anything.

Who knows.. perhaps they will issue a statement and explain why they got a cease and decist order.

I've no doubt this will surface in one way or another though :)

Good lord, at £10 he would only have needed 2,600 customers to afford the car. And he would have had enough money left over for a haircut too!
 
He could have easily done 10 iPhones a week, and at a small charge of £25 ($50), so I think he dropped the ball a bit.

No, he traded one unlocked iPhone for a £26k car.

He couldn't have sold software since it wasn't a software solution, and offering an unlock service would have gotten him targetted by at&t. I think he made the smart move by bailing out and getting £26 grand for a couple months work.
