Not unlock software!
No one has released unlock software publicly, and most of the people that claim to have software unlocks, have failed their release date. The two that have said [iphonesimfree and iphoneunlocking] have not released it!

You can unlock the iPhone by using the hardware unlock method [2 wires + opening up your iPhone.
TurboSim, silvercard etc.

I have tried to open my iPhone, and dude, it is hard! I am waiting for the software unlock, because I am on holiday I cannot use turbosims...

Actually although the steps are pretty hard its not too expensive. My mate used geohots unlock successfully (google it)
bit of tricky soldering /pinning and some software flashing, but worth it tho~~as i said he's got 02 pay as go sim in it now!

What's the point of using the iPhone on anything other than a high-limits / unlimited data plan? Surely it loses its appeal if doing anything remotely iPhone-like on it costs you a couple of quid a day on data charges.

Well the iphone is going to be on O2 in the UK, O2 has practically no data plans whatsoever. They charge £3 per MB and are the worst network for data in the whole country. So buying the iphone on contract isn't going to get you anything better.

T-mobile on the other hand charge £1 for 40MB and have £30/3GB and £45/10GB contracts.

I don't think most people are buying the iphone to use it for data related tasks, otherwise they would just get a £200 xda which does everything the iphone does but better. More as a status that they are rich and can throw away £500 on a phone.

Lol at the pictures of the hack gone wrong!

(p.s. it was my mate who unlocked it, I'll see what he says as he got some help off a forum on the software side so if you need any tips...also instead of soldering , if you read the comments on the blog, using pins is a little easier.)

You mean when microsoft banned modified xboxes and 12 hours later hackers released a new firmware unbanning them again?;)

I'd rather have a phone thats going to work 100% of the time (subject to network availability) and not have it locked by apple and have to wait for the crackers to recrack it.

Apple wouldn't be able to lock it unless you downloaded their sofware for some reason. Even then it would be illegal for them to do so. They can't stop your phone working just because you have modified it, you own the hardware and can do whatever you want with it.

It is not illegal to unlock the handset for personal use, but modifying their software on the phone IS illegal.. that's where the problem lies for these unlocking services (they're not for personal use, and AT&T argue that it changes the software on the phone)

If you have an unlocked iPhone then wait a week or so after the update before applying the patch, and you'll find out if it will lock the handset through the grapevine :)
