Iphone OS 3.0...

Happy with the addition of copy and paste, although clippy does the job for me very well :D

Not bothered by MMS, Ive no reason to use and never had-iam not sure what the fuss it about?!

Turn by turn, yes again another nice addition, but most have sat nav now which would probably work better.

Does anyone think there will be an update before 3.0? Why is apple charging iPod touch uses 10 bucks for 3.0?

I assume he means that v1's are going to drop in value now?
I can certainly see that happening. I wouldn't mind one tbh, it would make a nice phone to give to my parents, or even little cousins who don't yet require 3G stuffs.

Read, digest.

Bottom line is that legally they have to charge as it introduces new features. It's all down to US accounting laws. That link was from a previous update but this new one is handled exactly the same.

Who? Apple chief's?

I believe that it's related to the fact that revenue for the iPhone is accounted for as a 24 month subscription, whereas the iPod Touch is accounted for as a one-off sale. By offering new functionality in an update, this can be seen as the original product not having been fully delivered until that point, and hence there should be revenue recognised at the point of the update. But if they don't charge for it, then they can't.

That's my understanding, but I recognise that my accountancy knowledge isn't particularly advanced!

Some nice updates :)

So did they say they were doing to add tethering?

At least I now can buy a shiny 3g without the fear of something new coming out soon after.

Tethering functionality is being worked on for 3.0 but will require network operator input as well. Knowing 02 they will probably want a separate contract for tethered data.

All in all a nice package of upgrades. For the nay sayers, I say go and buy an Android or some other such inferior product.

For the V1 users, why should apple continue provide the same functionality in a redundant model that they do in their current line up ?
Its called evolution. If you want the same functionality as current model owners, buy a new iphone.

Please try to be a little nicer, although I understand what you are saying. It would be taken in by people if you expressed it in less of an arrogant tone!

Some people seem to be disappointed because nothing revolutionary was introduced. What did you expect 3.0 to do? Make toast? It's a software update.

I'm pretty pleased. Good combination of finally getting the basics nailed down (copy-and-paste, MMS, landscape keyboard, stereo Bluetooth, searchable mail) with some interesting new stuff (push notification, universal search, communication with accessories). The only thing which annoys me a bit is the big emphasis on in-app purchasing. It's not useful or important to me, and I can't see it being that big a deal to many people other than the developers who'll make even more money out of it.

Seems like the only thing left for Windows Mobile users to poke fun at is the lack of video.

Exactly my thoughts, it's a concept from the gaming world (especially consoles) where you pay for virtual items. I can't help think that companies like EA are holding back content from game releases only to push it out as DLC they can charge for later. It's the whole micropayment system we are seeing on things like Playstation Home.

Bit disappointed that no iPhone hardware was introduced (I.e. 3rd Generation) :(

Something better leak soon or else I'll explode :p

I think you spotaineously exploding would be more interesting than a 3rd gen iphone.

What could they possibly add apart from a better camera or GB's worth of pre loaded porn?

CS, I think the point on MMS might be that without 3G it would take a long time to download multimedia content, thus rather than release a product on a platform that doesn't handle it very well they opted to not release it at all for said product. At the end of the day there are still updating something that has been EOL's so Id be pretty happy Im getting anything at all as a 1v user. Although leaving it up to the user would be acceptable.

No MMS on v1 for no good reason etc

Ah well just use swirly it works fine. Nothing new here really for 2G that isn't already on a jailbroken phone. Good for people who don't know about it though I guess.

It'll also work for 1st gen iPhone owners, though they won't receive A2DP or MMS due to hardware limitations.

LOL ! yeah right. As someone else has said in this thread all that is for is to get more sales on their 3G phone & iBluetooth works fine also on the 2G :rolleyes:

You could get so many more features into this bad boy!
* Better Camera (5MP +)
* Camera Flash
* Slide-Out Keyboard (... Maybe :p lol!)

Wow you know what... I thought there were more...
This has made me think whether or not to wait :p
If you think of more tell me :D

A slide-out keyboard would just make the phone bulky without really adding very much. There's not much wrong with the existing keyboard, especially now it'll be usable in landscape mode (unless you dislike touchscreens, in which case you probably shouldn't have an iPhone in the first place!)

And people should stop whinging about what is and isn't coming to v1. Be happy that Apple has developed some new features for an outdated device.

They have no choice but to charge for the iPod touch update so don't blame Apple for it!
Lots of other companies manage it so I think it's definitely something Apple could work around, it just works in their favour not to, and then to blame it on something else.
