Iphone OS 3.0...

Awesome news! Can't wait for this, it gives me a reason to sell my old touch and save up for a new iPhone as the contract for my current phone runs out in the summer. :)

Be nice to be able to change themes, icons etc out the box, wallpapers etc without jailbreaking it.
MMS of course.
Copy paste.
Forward messages.
Open up bluetooth.

Then I'm a happy chappy. :D

Me too!

Especially if it can be automated (i.e. syncs as soon as you get in range of your Mac/PC)...that asking for too much? ....probably

They were discussing a similar service for Mobile Me customers, so I see no reason why it couldn't work on a local network.

To clarify; you'd probably have to do an initial sync via USB, then it just syncs playlists, play count changes, new pictures; essentially everything that isn't going to take an hour to sync over-the-air.

(before people think "ooooh yeah, sync 20GB over the air.. suuuure")

I'm expecting the following..
  • Push notification service
  • Storage increase to 32GB
  • Camera increase to 3.2MP (5 would be better, but who knows) with autofocus
  • Battery upgrades
  • Copy and paste (if it's not in 3.0, it won't appear)
  • Official tethering method

What I don't expect..
  • Background processes (1 of the very things they set out NOT to do, because of battery life)
  • MMS
  • Flash

I can't help thinking that 3.0 will just be improvements to what the iPhone already has without any really new features such as MMS, copy and paste etc.

Hope I'm wrong.

Well flash wont be appearing because adobe are still in construction of a lightweight flash player for it.
Its coming, Its just something that needs to work really well.
MMS maybe I dunno, think we would have seen it by now if it was ever gonna come.
background processes maybe on only specific applications for reasons mentioned above. Battery life.

Iphone 3rd gen
I know it won't and I have bitched about it for long enough but mobile phone cameras are useless without a decent flash unit!!!! Thank god Apple aren't in the camera market.
I'd happily buy a cameraless iphone becuase its simply (i wanna swear hard)
and the above is coming from a photographer. I DONT use my iPhone for pictures..

Apple already said they were going down the "push notification service" route rather than allowing background processes, this was coming up to 9 months ago now. I expect it took them some time to implement as it requires infrastructure on the phone and the Internet to coordinate updates efficiently. I imagine Apple will be in control of the "Push" server so they can control the number of updates to the phone, having several applications push multiple times per hour would definatly nuke the battery, hence the need for external control.

It annoyed me when my mate said he didn't need a camera as his phone had a 5 megapixel camera on it. He doesn't seem to understand the difference between that and a real camera with optics.

Why can't something as powerful as the iPhone copy/paste? They should really get that working in 3.0.
It makes sense it's a whole new phone coming too. Bout 9-12 months after the last one?

But it must be good it has five whole mega pixels. Who cares if it has no optical zoom, a lousy sensor, crappy auto (or fixed) ISO, and rubbish glass. It must be as good as a dedicated camera! ;)

Each application runs in a Sandbox environment and cannot communicate with other Apps (note: some of Apples apps can) that is why a device as powerful as the iPhone hasn't yet got cut and paste.

At this moment in time I'd rather have Apps that cannot (in theory!) bring the core OS down over cut and paste.

I think some people are forgetting that this is still a phone, and the one-day battery life is already really poor. Upgrading the hardware (unless they really optimise it as well) will mean even worse battery life!

What can apple add that hasn't allready been made available via jailbroken 3rd party developers, i personally think apple need remove the finger that thay have securely lodged in their A..S..S.. and start playing catchup !

16GB Jailbroken / Unlocked 3G iPhone for the win !!! :D

EDIT: Image removed due to tackyness issues, restyle currently in planning stage ;)

Official non-crappy-SOCKS-proxy tethering built in to the OS would be ace. I have NetShare, it works, but it's a hassle to set up each and every time.
