iRacing

Did a really dumb thing yesterday, racing in a 34 coupe,40 laps around a small oval,my first online race, ran a few laps, enjoying it,and filled with a little trepidation too, made a small mistake and clipped the outside wall,my steering was pulling to the left.
Was told to pit,and i ignored it,and i passed a few people even now handicapped, then, bang, disqualified, ahh at least i'll know better next time.

well i finally finished a race at sap in the star mazda...not the best race but i finished despite been rammed twice and getting wrote off after i spun, i spent 8 mins in the pits...but i loved every min of it...

One thing I have found has really helped me is going to a 3 screen eyefinity setup. It just helps so much in being aware of your surroundings. I haven't had a race since I've had this setup but I have been in some crowded practice sessions and its just a hell of a lot easier to know where everyone is around you, and being able to see both wing mirrors is very helpful.

Yeah i'll admit triple's made my whole experience much better.

Am currently about to pull the trigger on a TrackIR unit...

HOWEVER, could someone please advise on what the minimum hardware requirements would be for a three screen setup to run iRacing it well.

I currently have:

Radeon 5770 1GB
8GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600
Phenom II BE x4 @ stock 3.4Ghz

I already have two screens so would require an additional 22" monitor and a graphics card at a minimum which supports eyefinity. Would a 6850 suffice?
Or another VGA card.

Would TrackIR offer better "bang for buck"?

Thanks.

The next season doesn't start until next Tuesday, this is what they call Week 13, just a week off basically.

Ever need a vacation after your vacation? Then Week 13 will have a familiar feel to it. To say the least, there’s lots of sim racing going on. . .
In terms of Official Series, we have the Week 13 Street Stocks Challenge running at Thompson, South Boston, Lanier, Oxford Plains and Charlotte Motor Speedway (both the quarter mile Legends oval and the 1.5 mile speedway) as well as the Week 13 Legends Road Series at Lime Rock, Summit Point and Okayama International Circuit.

As both the Street Stock Challenge and Legends Road Series are official series, Safety Ratings and iRatings apply and competitors have a final chance to increase their license ratings before the official license promotions for 2012 Season 1 are finalized at week’s end. Likewise, rookies who have yet to complete the category-specific minimum participation requirements for graduation to a D license (two official races or four time trials in each category) have one last chance to do so in Week 13.

When it comes to Unofficial Series, iRacers have a plethora of choices. If you like racing at upwards of 200 mph with roof over your head, then the Carburetor Cup – with the Impala Class A at Talladega Superspeedway -- is just the ticket. On the other hand, if you prefer your cockpit and your wheels open, then you’ll love Formula Fun with the Williams-Toyota FW31 at Circuit Park Zandvoort

And speaking of open wheels, we’re also running the IZOD IndyCars in their own Week 13 oval series. You might well ask “Where?” The answer is Charlotte and New Smyrna (Myers swears he does not get a cut of the spare parts concession at New Smyrna).

Back by popular demand is the Week 13 Production Enduro, only this time around we’ll be featuring the Mazda MX5 Cup, the Pontiac Solstice and the VW Jetta TDi at Suzuka in a preview of the 2012 Season 1 iRacing Grand Touring Cup.

Did we mention the third annual World Cup of iRacing tournament will also be in full swing throughout Week 13? The Group Regionals (aka RACC Runoffs) run from January 24 – 27, followed by the Group Finals (aka RACC Finals) on January 28 and the World Cup of iRacing Finals on January 29. The road races will feature the Star Mazdas at Spa-Francorchamps and Chevy Silverados at Michigan International Speedway. 25 of iRacing’s 38 international clubs will be eligible and 24 of them will be looking to dethrone two-time World Cup of iRacing champions DE-AT-CH.

At the same time, Round Three (Europe) of the Intel GT Series regional competition will also be taking place January 24-30 featuring the HPD ARX01c at Spa-Francorchamps.

Hmmm . . .

The Intel GT Series AND the World Cup at Spa in the same week? Sounds like the virtual Ardennes will be a busy place. But then again, “busy” is the name of the game for iRacing in this edition of Week 13.

Think I'm going to sign up this weekend. G27 at the ready! Got some time to practise, so I'm hoping it's as good as it looks. Wish me luck.

Think I am going to go the three monitor route instead of TrackIR. Will need to buy over a couple of months.

What shall I get first, new 22" monitor or 6950?

I think monitor as VGA prices will generally decrease where as monitor prices are not as volatile.

Firstly the system, yours should be fine with just a graphics card, I was running reasonably well at 5760x1200 (capped at 59fps, almost always on that cap) with a ~3.5GHz Core2Duo and a 5850. The 6850 is a small amount faster I believe, and 2Gb will help, the 6950 is a fair chunk faster.

I recently 'upgraded' to a 6950 at 6970 shaders/clocks and a better cooler to clock my cpu to 4.2GHz and I now run everything on max at 5760x1200, looks gooooood :)

If you're buying new if anything the 6950 prices are likely to go up now that they're superceded (unlikely to decrease I would've thought). But as you say the monitor price will probably be the same in 12 months.

It's worth noting the 'hassle' with eyefinity, if you don't know already, the cards only support 2 monitors using either DVI or HDMI (a 6950 will have 2x DVI, 1x HDMI), the 3rd monitor has to be connected to one of the Mini-Displayport monitors, which means an adaptor if your monitor doesn't have a DP input, this is an extra £10-25 depending on where you get it from.

And yeah, I'd go for triple screen over trackir tbh :)
