iRacing

Just had my first race on there in the mazda cup. Came 7th out of 10. Would have done better if someone didn't spin me off the track when i held the outside line on a corner. Think i got disqualified in the cool down lap though lol

Similar story here barmy, was supposed to finally get some free time to race yesterday but it just didn't happen, now I'm busy every evening this week so Saturday and Sunday afternoon are my only chances to race, it was so much easier when I was an antisocial git with no life :p

I'm going to be doing my first race in a few weeks tonight in the Maxda Cup, I used to be quite competitive at Summit Point when I raced regularly. But I'm just aiming for a clean few races.

I prefer Summit Point in the Mazda compared to the other Rookie tracks. Might try and get in the 8:00 GT3 race tonight if I'm back from the gym in time.

But arent most of the the cars and tracks extra? eg to finish a league you have to buy them.

Sadly yes, tracks are about $14.95 and cars $11.95, it's not a particularly cheap hobby. You don't have to buy anything for the rookie leagues though so you only need to pay the membership to see if the game is right for you.
My first race back went a lot better than expected. Starting 12th of of 12 in the Maxda cup, I put consistent and clean laps in to get me to my eventual finishing place of 4th. The best thing though was i got 0 incident points.

I suggest you give the 3 months for 1 a go and see how you like it.

You'll get all the content you need to race in the rookie series. Once out of rookie you can carry on in the Mazda and compete in the D class races and get your C licence by just racing the tracks you have. After than you can pick once C class car and maybe a couple of tracks for that series to get your B licence. Then you can race two of the best cars in the game in the GT3 series.

Just don't buy a load of cars and tracks until you're sure you love the game. Because when your subscription runs out you don't have access to any tracks or cars you've bought until you re subscribe.

If you like the game and realise how good the whole service runs, then paying for cars and tracks won't seem so bad. Quality is expensive and iRacing is quality through and through.

This is the big downside to iRacing, which after a couple of seasons isn't a downside.

Now is a very good time to join. The new tyre model (NTM) is very good and the SIM is now FUN and rewarding.

You could trawl back through this thread and see me bashing the feel/snappyness of the cars. The amount of hate I gave the Skip Barber over the years and last season it was my favourite car.

The free Mazda MX5 is also meant to be really good with the NTM but I have not had a go so cannot comment.

The tracks are second to none, they ARE the best tracks (even if a few need an update).

This is what will be what will happen if you join up.

spend $12 for 3 months
You will do 30+ races in the MX5 in the first month
Cry at how slow you are
spend $60 on cars and tracks for D licence (highly recommend the skippy)
your 3 months will end
Spend a small fortune on a new wheel/pedals.
sign up for a year $99 IIRC
another $100 on content
$49 for black Friday sales (year subscription)
Another $100 over the next year on content
iRacing begins paying for itself

I've spent $655 + I'm $108 in credit. My account will run until June 2016 and has been running since Feb 2011. And if I knew what I know now I'd have been a bit smarter with my money.
I also have oval racing content as well so you can half my costs easy.

Hope this helps

Thanks very much for the breakdown Marshstyles.

IMo iracing has a player domination problem, like most online games. I guess races are dominated by the top 10-20% of fantastic racers. Which leaves most other racers only aiming for a middle of the field position. So what's the point of playing/paying if you have no chance of winning.

Because you are put into races with other drivers of similar iRating and therefore similar skill level. The only way to be in races the top guys is to be one of them.

I've been stuck at the same skill level for years (3 wins only) and I have never been bored! Online racing is second to none here

Interesting, what keeps you coming back then if you are unlikely to win?

You don't have to win a race to enjoy the completion. It's not like getting raped in an online FPS game. If two guys are a close match in speed and skill then you can be the last two drivers across the line and I guarantee you will have enjoyed racing each other.

Some of the best sim races I've ever had have been absolute scraps from start to finish, winding up in 12th place overall. Similarly I've had lights to flag victories in which I didn't see another car and were dull as anything. The enjoyment doesn't come from winning.

I 100% agree with this. Lets be honest we are all competitive if not we wouldn't be racing but the races where you are involved in a close scrap with someone and there is respect between you are amazing. For me there is no other experience in gaming like it and no other game (i know i know its a sim not a game bla bla) gets my adrenaline pumping and makes me feel so immersed and involved.

When you get your first top ten finish in one of the better series you will be punching the air like you have just won a world championship.

The game isnt a shallow online racer like the millions out there that run a race of 6 people from a lobby.
You will be racing on 20+ man grids against players from all divisions. You will spot someone you know from your division even at the back. If you beat him for 16th and have a great battle the whole way. It feels as good as a win.
