iRacing

This is why I only do 1 GT3 race per week for credits. I mainly race in SRF as this doesn't happen so much as the client al tend to be older and more respectful of fun close and clean racing. There are a group of about 20 regulars who race very close and clean with only the occasional mistakes that are true mistakes.

Obviously some rookies to SRF cause problems, but as a community we help and explain to them what SRF and racing is about. There is none of the typical cussing and swearing you normally hear (usually from the other side of the pond) and the atmosphere is generally awesome.

I run the weekly threads for the SRF forum (Steve Allan) and you will see the SRF signatures all over iRacing that I have put together to help promote the series. This season we have seen about a 40% rise in participation and some awesome racing. Check it out, worth it if you like clean racing.

It may not have the glamour of GT3, but then it isn't Forza and so the kids keep away generally.

Forced qualifying is an interesting one, I see the argument for it and can't really argue against that, but as someone who regularly doesn't qualify I don't really want to see it forced on me :p

It's quite possible to be a faster driver, not qualify and not cause issues, and it's also possible for a driver that qualified to have got a draft, or just nailed a lucky lap, and then cause issue. But it's also a definite 'thing' that some drivers who haven't qualified cause crashes on a regular basis.

Barmy, you mentioned the guy divebombing you, and yes that's clearly an incident that's his fault, but ultimately could you have avoided it? I'm betting the answer is yes, you may have lost a place of even several places but you'd still be in the race at least. Especially at the start of a race.

Sometimes it's better to take the pragmatic approach, if the guy is divebombing you then he's going to do the same to others, why not let him take himself/others out ahead of you?

Changing the SR system is unlikely to alter these drivers behaviour, they already get 'punished' for it as much as they ever will, so no matter what your race would've been over...

Out of the last 3 incidents where I've been hit from behind, the only way to avoid being hit would have been to not turn into the corner and go straight on. That would've meant me hitting someone else or hitting the wall.

At some point you have to stop looking behind and actually drive the corner. In the top split of any race I shouldn't spend more time looking in my mirrors than the road ahead. Especially when the guy behind has an IR of over 4000 and over 5 years on the service.

The one I protested from last night I passed on the inside on the start finish straight, took a shallow line into turn one to give him plenty of room.
On the exit I was still on the inside and wasn't on the racing line but he just ran into the back of me. He could've maintained the racing line and not hit me. If I remember I'll upload the replay.

Split driver in terms of qualifying times first then the drivers without a qualifying time are split separately based on IR as they are now. Faster drivers always start at the front. The only downside is you may end up in races with more of a speed spread then you do now.

First RUF Cup race of the week last night and thankfully I seem to have some pace at this track. Qualified with a 38.9 at Interlagos Moto (which is an awesome place) and race pace seems to be 39s, although I think I could improve that if I can tweak my setup to warm the tyres more effectively.

3rd place in yesterday's 19:45 race was enough to put me on top of Div2, at least for a couple of days. It also managed to push me over 3000 iRating. Which is nice :D

And also found another real-life driver in a qualifying session, although sadly he didn't do the race straight after: http://members.iracing.com/membersite/member/CareerStats.do?custid=165802

Well done on the 3k.

After two disaster races in the top split earlier this week, I did two last night in the split below and managed to finish both without incident. Started 4th and 2nd, finished 10th and 5th. Had poor starts in both races but in the first race I ran wide at turn one to avoid some very optimistic moves and it cost me a lot of places. In race two the other guys were just quicker. The tyres only seem good for half the race and then it's almost tiptoeing around in the last two laps.

Still can drive the Ruf C Spec. Tried it again last night at Canada, couldn't get it to slow down. Probably doesn't help that I drive the Ruf Track most of the time and I'm trying to try the C spec the same way. I really want a C class series car I can race every week along side the GT3 series. More practice I guess.

Hi lads, ive just got a free 3 month subscription, and im thinking of getting a year for $49 on sale at the moment, ive never tried the game with a wheel before, but i love racing games, and even with an xbox controller im loving the game, any thoughts on what i should be focusing on buying for my rig? What im looking at getting is a racing wheel and pedals etc, MAYBE a stand and the right setup... Ive got about £350 to do it with

My current setup is:
Amd 8320
Corsair vengeance 8gb 1600mhz
Sapphire R9 290

And that is all that will effect performance, so ill just name those, and my monitor is a LG 29 inch ultrawide, but i have a samsung 32 inch smart tv right next to it, and my monitor is still under returns guarantee here at OCUK, so if needs be i can send it back, as im not 100% sure if it will be the best option for racing sims... and in doing so that will add £200 to the budget!

Well done on the 3k.
Thanks :)

It took me a while to get used to it, even coming from something as slow as the MX5. It really is the embodiment of 'slow in, fast out'. You really have to get the car stopped on the apex and accelerate out of the corner as soon as you've got the space on exit to accommodate the understeer. A good setup does help tou alleviate some of it, but it's just the way the car is due to it's weight distribution. Check the CSpec forum as there's quite a few good setups in there.

As a start you can try jacking the brake balance forward to something around 52%. This keeps the car much more stable under heavy braking and makes trailbraking much easier too. Once you've got the feel you can move the balance backwards to increase braking performance again.

Have you tried the Corvette? I've heard it's a good car to drive now and participation is on the up.

The 29" ultra wide sounds perfect. The only thing better would be triples. However I would say that a decent wheel is far more important if you want to really get into iRacing.

A certain place was selling G27s for £150 not so long ago. I can't link you as its a competitor, but if you google you should find it. It's a fantastic wheel and will serve you well.

*edit*
Just checked, and it's now back up to £220. Even at that price it's a bargain, well within your budget and all you'll need to get you going properly. Save the change for buying tracks and cars.

I've had the Corvette for a while, sounds great but it has a lot of power to try and tame. Plus only one race went official this weeks so far.

I'd go for a cheaper wheel to start with and make sure that the iRacing is for you.

Either a Logitech DFGT or the Thrustmaster T80 or 458.

It takes a lot of time and effort to get the most out of the service. It's expensive to keep up a subscription and buy the content needed to move on to other series once you're out of rookie.

A lot of people go straight for the G27, having never sim raced with a wheel before, and tend you get very little use out of it.

If you are sure and your budget is £350 then the Thrustmaster T500 RS is a fantastic wheel and has better pedals than any of the other wheels already mentioned. But the desk clamp is rubbish and really needs hard mounting in a sim rig or wheel stand. I go so sick of mine moving on the desk that I drilled holes in my desk and bolted it down. The clamps on the Logitech wheels are much better for desk mounting.

Well done on 3k!

I competed last night in the GOT Endurance series, first race of the season at Sebring for 3 hours with 2 team mates. I joined them late on for the last stint and from starting 35th we finished 23rd and with only 8 incident points, both from car contact that was not or fault. Pretty pleased with that. It seems these unofficial series are the way to race the GT3 cars where they're policed effectively and people drive with far higher standards than the official series.

Thanks. Just got my A licence now too, after winning the RUF class in a WSCS race :D

That's the entire reason I've tried to avoid the official GT3 series as long as I can. I think I may drop in to it every now and again next season.. at least when it's at a track with plenty of space :)

Last 3 GT3 races have been very clean and I've had some very close races.

I should've finished the week with a top 5 in my last race, but binned it 3 corners from home on the last lap. I caught the cone on the inside of the corner and it must have destabilised the car or got wedged, because the front end just went from under me. A bit like when a guy's engine blew up in front of me at Road Atlanta.

I was going to order the Obutto Revolution tonight as an early Christmas present to myself.

Out of stock until the end of January 2015. :(

Have you checked out the GT Omega cockpits? They're 1/2 the price of the Obutto Rev (once you've included a triple monitor stand, swivel keyboard mount and gloss tabletops) and seem to get just as good reviews. *edit* Although checking the site they seem to be out of stock until Jan too.

Another week, another RUF Cup track. Bathurst this time. I remember it being a challenge in Forza5, but my God, nothing compared to this. My best is a 2:09.4 on race fuel, but I haven't managed to string together 3 clean laps yet, let alone an entire race distance.

Going to be a tough one for division points and my SR I think :(

I guy I drive with has one and for all intents I think it's very good, he loves it. He's a good bloke, can give you his name to message if you like.

I'm loving Bathurst, I've only managed a 2:10.4 fastest lap, race wise I've had a4th and 5th so far, threw 3rd away both times with a spin on the white flag lap! My only mistake all race!

Half the field were in the pits last race though!

Yes I looked at the GT Omega as well, but as yiu said they're out of stock too.

Not sure if there's anything else that does the job of a desk and a cockpit.

Looks like I'll just have to wait.

What put me off the GT Omega cockpits was the fact that they look so flimsey.

You end up spending £500 and then run the risk of regretting paying the extra to have something bomb-proof which will last you as long as you want it to, and i doubt it'll lose much value if you got bored of it all in 5yrs time.

It kinda feels like theres 4 levels, theres the cheap £200 setups with the seat and wheel mount which are essentially sold on the basis of having a racing seat. Theres the GT Omega which is a step beyond that, adding monitor mounts. Then theres the Obutto, its solid and versatile. Then theres the active hydraulic cockpits, proper silly money stuff.

As ive said before, its the same guy, same phone number on the websites :D who does both GT Omega and Obutto UK.

You should try and contact him, see if he'd do a discounted deal on the Obutto on the same basis, or throwing something in for free. He's knocking off £50 (10%) for paying up front, so see if he'd do the same for an up-front payment on the R3v.

Also, just to clarify the earlier comment. You DONT pay for the keyboard tray, thats included already.
The obutto r3Volution Base Cockpit includes everything below:
  • Real car sports seat with a slight tilt for comfort
  • Very stable steel frame with 2mm thick walled tubing
  • Fully articulating keyboard & mouse tray for optimal positioning
[*]Includes a self-adhesive mouse pad material for covering all of keyboard & mouse tray, wheel deck mount, and pedal tray.
etc

Cockpit, Triple screens, Acrylic tabletops if you wanted them (i had them on, but removed mine entirely a few weeks back), and perhaps the speaker mounts.

Looked around at other cockpits tonight and I'll just wait for the Obutto Rev to come back into stock.

I'm not even temped by the Ozone, so I know the Revolution is the best option for me.

I'll email them at some point nearer the time of them restocking to see if I can get a pre order discount. I emailed them to see when they're back in stock and they said February 2015, so plenty of time to try and negotiate a discount.

Managed a lucky win a Suzuka tonight. Started 4th, inherited 3rd due to a spinner, inherited 2nd due to a spinner, inherited the lead at the hairpin on the last lap due to a spinner.

The guy that lead from pole, who was miles faster than anyone else, spun 3 times during the race. He got away with the first two as he was far enough in front. Third time unlucky for him, but lucky for me.

Picked up a 2nd at Bathurst in the ruf cup, great track, so many lap of faith corners it's a proper hoon to drive!

Just hit my A licence and finished a paint:
