iRacing

Lime Rock in the GT3 turned out to be pretty good, especially compared to racing in the Skippy last week.

Our internet went down on my second qualy lap, thankfully it came back on with 50 seconds to grid. Had a decent race, probably could've had a top ten finish but for a small mistake that cost me 4-5 places. That put me behind guys who I was quicker than by a small amount so passing then took a while. By that time I'd lost touch and finished 13th I think.

Skippy was mostly carnage on every race, meaning another week of irating loss.

Oculus Rift has had a price drop to £400 including the touch controllers. Semi temped at that price. Selling the touch controllers, the Xbox One controller and two of my three screens could make it a pretty cheap proposition.

I have triple screens but head tracking and more realistic FOV are appealing.

That's balanced against lower detail and maybe less comfort. More than concerned about heat generated by the Rift than actually wearing it.

Comfort can play a big part, what's the longest race your normally do? I have had to have a fan pointed at me in the recent heat we've been having.

Lower detail, you don't miss much especially in iRacing, I turn shadows down a little that's about it.

Usually just race Skippy, so a total of around 35 minutes. But lately I've been doing GT3 and IMSA so nearly and hour with qualifying attached to 40 minute races.

With the summer weather I'm usually sweating my nads off by the end of the race. But it's a small room with three screens and a beefy PC churning heat out.

You should give the IMSA a go Barmy, really clean racing the races I've been in.
Plus the Ferrari is atrocious fun to drive.

I've done a couple. Two at Watkins Glen, first was pretty clean. But mostly down to my caution than other drivers being fair. The second I got rammed off at the bus stop chicane on the last lap, after running the entire race without a single incident. We were 15th and 16th and no one else within 5 seconds so I didn't even fight him, but he still managed to wipe me out.

I also raced Mosport last night. Qualified 37th, which last but one and over a second off the pace, but kept out of trouble to be running around 20th with about 12 minutes left. Then I got used as a brake in to Moss which spun me off and cost me loads of time. I did finish but still lost iRating.

I'm starting to think it's me. I afford other drivers the courtesy of not dive bombing. If drivers stick their nose in stupid places then I'm the one that does everything to avoid contact, often causing me loose time by not taking the racing line. If I'm running with a few other cars, I'll bide my time and wait for an opportunity to make clean pass. I don't drive like a dick and I still loose out.

The best way I've found of staying out the carnage is to qualify at the front. Lost Irating for the first time in months Sunday but two races on Monday got me back up over 3000.

What is your Irating Barmy?

I lost a good few hundred which put me below the dreaded 2000, oh man!

I honestly dont drive enough just now to have a right good go at it, only subbed for 1 month there to see if i'll stay or sell up.

Just under 2500 after a couple more races last night. So much for giving up.

I peaked at just over 2700 a few weeks ago, with a view to try and get to 3000. The trouble with that is I'm not quick enough to maintain it. Even with constant clean races I'd loose iRating on finishing lower than my car number.

I don't have the will to practice more than I do to get faster so I'll forever average 2500 by the looks of it.

Not that I mind, I just wished other drivers would have a bit more courtesy.

The last race I did last night I was racing against a Brazilian who'd already gone off in front of me and rejoined the track in a way that nearly took me out. After a few more laps he got disconnected. When he rejoined he came out of the pits just behind me, bit a lap down. He then proceed to race me. I let him pass and then he was slow out of the corner and we nearly made contact. This went on for a few laps and allowed the guys behind to make up at least 1.5 seconds. When I complained over voice chat he just said something about getting his lap back.

I currently have 3007 and reckon 3500 is achievable judging by my pace. 4000 was probably be a struggle to keep it around that, I know you shouldn't worry about irating but I find it hard not to. I'm having loads of fun driving the Ferrari at the moment. Going back to the AMG now for the SPA 24 hours the things feel like a boat wallowing about compared to the nimble 488.

What I find weird is in official practice sessions I can sometimes get within a second or less of the fastest guys. But then in official races I'm back being two seconds slower.

Last week in most of my practice for the GT3 at Lime Rock I was easy in the top ten and sometimes top five. But in the race the I qualify 14th.

Same for the IMSA at Mosport. In practice I could get within a second of the fastest time set, but the race I'm last but one over two seconds off.

Itching to get back to iRacing, haven't been able to play in over 12 months. Need to figure out a way that I can set up my wheel in my current living arrangements

I have a wooden floor and a desk chair with wheels so need to attach the pedals to something and attach the chair to the pedals in some way

Have I missed much in the last year or so?

Wheel stand pro? I've had mine for 4+ years great piece of kit. Actually had a bit,Circuit de la Sarthe, Porsche 911 cup car, Dirt Oval (crappy american stuff), Ferrari + Ford GTEs which are both great fun to drive, two old GTO cars you have probably never heard of. There is a new time trial mode and UI coming out very soon.

Good shout, didn't think about the wheel stand. I could then just take the wheels off my chair and hopefully that might keep me in place!

I've watched some videos on YouTube of the Porsche and it looks a hoot to drive

Porsche is good fun to drive but also difficult. I just bought a cheap mat/carpet to put underneath my chair.
