iRacing

I have a wooden floor and a desk chair with wheels so need to attach the pedals to something and attach the chair to the pedals in some way

I had this problem. Get a long thin (in terms of width) deep pile floor mat (hallway type) to stop the chair moving and just roll it out under chair and pedals when you set up (most pedal sets have carpet grips or you can get some velcro attached to the bottom of pedal set maybe). It's not perfect but if you're not too brutal with the pedals it can work. You just have to stop the chair spinning around if you brake too hard :)

You could always cut some MDF to mount the pedals and have a notch to put the chair wheel in to stop it moving back.

Basically what I did before I had my Obutto.

MDF butted against wall with pedals screwed to it and hole to drop one wheel of the chair into.

It seems I've been driving the Skippy all wrong for the past five years. After watching an episode of The Simpit on YouTube about the different shifting aids available in iRacing. I decided to give the Skippy a go without any shifting aids at all.

I'd previously used auto blip, thinking it didn't really make much difference. How wrong and was. After about ten minutes if practice is already beaten my previous fastest time this week by three tenths and in the following race I went a full second quicker. Although I think track conditions also helped the faster lap time. Even so I think there's half a second difference, which at some tracks is the difference between 6 or 7 places on the starting grid.

Only downside is I can see me buying a new Fanatec SQ 1.5 after selling mine off a few months back.

Pfft, n00bs and their driving aids :p

I think all the aids are 'designed' to be slower than doing it manually, plus in the skippy being so sensitive during braking I'd imagine it's likely to make it more unsettled.

Back in my day I don't think there were any driver aids, not even auto clutch (but could be wrong on that one), but then none of the cars needed a clutch except the starts.

The aids do slow you down but Iracing will not say by how much. Anyone doing the Spa 24 hours on the weekend? I will be representing Pure Motorsport on Saturday (Not the really fast German team)

Does anyone know if the shifting aids make any difference in the cars that in real life have auto blip? The GT3 cars for example. Does turning off shifting aids as opposed to auto blip make any difference, since the car should be doing it anyway?

I don't have any plans on doing the Spa 24 hours.

so what do you reckon guys in terms of Direct drive wheel - OSW or the Accuforce v2? Both are now about the same price I think and the AF seems like a complete package. On the other hand it seems the OSW is more bang for your buck. How compatible are these wheels with other games?

The AF is a stepper motor rather than a servo from what I've read and reviews I've watched. Which makes it a bit notchy, apparently. Still head and shoulders above any consumer grade wheel.

I think they are both compatible with all current PC sims. (iRacing, AC, rFactor 2, Automobilista, pCARS, LFS and RaceRoom)

I've been looking at DD wheels quite a lot recently, even though I wouldn't be in the market for one for about another year.

By which time Fanatec would have launched their DD wheel, which will be compatible with all their current rims. Meaning their will be another player in the complete package arena. They won't be using the MiGE motor though, it'll be their own design. It also means console compatibility.

Although I have just discovered today I've been using my CSW V2 wheel without linear force ticked in the options. And now that I have linear force on it's made a big difference to how the cars feel while I'm driving and it's definitely for the better.

Quick question to all you iracers - I already have a G29 with shifter along with a next level wheel stand and the PC that is in the sig. Bought the wheel because I was falling out of love with gaming and have been loving it since :p so much so that when I move house (I'll have more space) I'm going to upgrade the stand to the full rig - the question is would you go triples or go VR with the rift? After a lot of reading I think triples will be the way to go and I'm thinking 27" - with a budget of around £350 per monitor what monitors would you go with. Also I may very well be upgrading to a 1080ti at the same time and downsizing my rig. Anyone have any opinions?

Alex

I have triples and have been temped by VR with the price drop on the Oculus Rift with touch controllers. You can sell.those off and the headset would cost less than a single screen of your budget.

Personally I'd go for VR at first.

It's cheaper to set up and if change your mind it's easy enough to sell on.

Triples not only cost more for the actual screens, it costs more in terms of overall cost of a sim rig for the mounting arms. They even cost more in terms of your electric bill.

There are few VR users who post in this thread regularly, so they'll be able to give you a better overview. Not sure if anyone went from triples to VR though.

So that's one vote for each so far. Thanks for your input! What do you prefer about the triples Spunkey?

Bear in mind I'm recommending from a cost perspective to you who hasn't tried either.

I haven't tried VR for myself as of yet. And I certainly wouldn't trade my triples before I had.

In general:

- better FOV when looking straight ahead, so you can use peripheral vision more effectively
- no screen door effect
- still able to find the buttons on your wheel/button box without having to fumble around
- higher res + better FPS
- it's a bit heavy when you're doing a long distance race, or having a 4+ hour session.

The screendoor and FOV were the biggest problems for me, as they killed any sense of immersion. I haven't tried a Vive yet, so the screendoor issue may be better than I remember, though.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, as I fully realise that comments like this tend to spark some people off. All I'm saying is this was my personal experience, your mileage may vary.
