iRacing

I do get that, that is perhaps the biggest point - maybe I expected too much.

I for sure know that in real life when I have raced, I have never seen anything even close to the madness I have seen playing this, maybe I just got "sucked in" with all the real world sim nonsense :)

If it was their real car and their life on the line, I can guarantee you would not see the same level of blocking ans swerving you see on Iracing.

On your latest video quite near the start, the white car, I think number 7 - he spun himself out. Let's be honest prior to that he was never ever ever going to let you past - no matter what, That is what I am talking about.

Yeah stuff happens I couldnt ever say the racing was as accurate as real with regards to how everyone else races totally clean. It's a video game after all, there's no huge monetary loss if you bin your car, the only reprocussions you get our a loss of a virtual number. But, the sum still does more than any other racing sim to put in something we're people do need to think about their actions and get penalised when it happens. For the most part it works, people don't intentionally wreck and do "try" to race clean, for me that's as good as you can get in a video racing game.

Perfect examples in my last video, don't know if you saw it.

Yeah, there is a part of this video though which demonstrates exactly one of the problems. At 2.50 ish , you get penalised 4x when you did not actually touch the other car - very unfair.

Love that video Tony... can I ask... about your graphics settings?

It seems the motion in your game feels more natural (graphics). Is there some kind of motion blur on or something?

Also the tracks look much nicer than on mine :| Do you have any extra graphical ons? Or is it just purely turning up the graphics settings to the maximum?

(How do you get the picture in picture? Thats cool :))

Just checked out your racing setup. Extremely nice bud :) And a testament that its not the wheel that makes you a better driver even though your using a Logitech G29 I think?. I really like your approach to racing bud. Subscribed to your channel :)

Yeah that is frustrating not going to lie, I initially thought he carelessly turned into me, but looking back at the replay he put his tyres on the grass and lost control causing him to hit me. But yep, the 4x when someone hits you is wrong, is why you get a high incident limit before disqualification.

Oh thanks mate, nice comment. If you look on my channel, I have a video where I show my exact graphic settings that give me those videos.

No I don't use any extra graphic settings, just what I select in game and the lighting around my rig. Screens might have something to do with it, 1440P IPS really nice colour on them and 144hz adaptive sync (usually around the 100fps in game).

Regarding the picture in picture, just OBS scene mate as well as the relative, standings, battlebot and telemetry. They are all recorded in OBS as when I race I don't have them on screen. After the recording I edit all the extras in Sony Vegas and place them over the gopro footage. Ppl seemed to want the overlays to track the race which is why I put them on, I personally like to race with nothing on screen, my dashboard screen behind my wheel tells me everything I need to know during the race.

Yes just a pony G29 setup. The steering wheel isn't the one that makes you a lot faster, it's the pedals. My next upgrade will be the Huesenkveld Sprint pedals can't wait.

I've just bought and recieved a Shure mic, stand and plosive shield so voice work will sound so much nicer, I hate the pony headset mic quality currently. I'm just waiting on the Go XLR audio interface which Is a few weeks away as it's now out of stock.

Really pleased you like the overall video approach though, not doing it to turn into a huge YouTube star, just a different way of showing off how cool sim racing can be on a triple screen setup. More content out there gets more people into sim racing which gets more Devs interested in making the next new sim. Getting some really positive feedback though which is nice.

And I race for the enjoyment, I'd rather finish last and have a fun clean race than be aggressive forcing a win. Probs why I've only won a few times in about 50 or so races. There's no worse feeling than ruining a race for someone else, so I race fair and clean always thinking of others first. I understand that mentality won't make me a winner, its just a videogame after all is my outlook on it. I get super excited when I'm top 10 don't get me wrong, that's the only goal I set when I race, anything higher is a bonus for me. There are some seriously fast guys around 2k Irating which always leads to fun racing.

Cheers Tony! Just pulled up your settings video, will give that a watch and thumbs up.
Definitely like the overlays and fully agree they are vital to your broadcast!

The dashboard screen behind your wheel is that little dash thing that says OSP on it?

Lastly.....

I like your mentality bud... Ive just literally started iracing yesterday and hope that I come across as many racers with your take on racing, as possible...

Yes, it's a 5" OSP screen, HDMI (google Onesimpro). I use it as a 4th screen and use simdash app to display a dash of my choice on it. I've templates for around 30 cars, all with various different screens that you can toggle through for a different readout, but I like this Ferrari 458 dash you see in my videos as it has all the important info on the first screen. If I toggle though this one, the next page is a leaderboard with live timings, and the 3rd screen is a live track map.

I've noticed when watching some iRacing on youtube people seem to have different race engineers/team voice, not sure what you call them but the the voice that gives you updates on the race etc. Some seem to be a lot more detailed than I have and I've heard some that actually say your name.

I take it these are addons, and if so any idea what? and can anyone recommend any other useful addons?

Also...... how do you get "trading paints" to work, I've looked on youtube but it seems to be outdated.

Thanks :)

The updated spotter is simply called 'Crew Chief'. It's a free third party download which works for most of the popular sims: http://thecrewchief.org/. Here's a quick vid on how to set it up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elHv1fRxXPY

With regard to trading paints, you simply download it and run it. Make sure you set it to always open when Windows starts, or open it yourself before launching iRacing.

Ok I suck donkey danglers at this game... I just dont get it...practising all evening summit points trying to break into 1.23s like other drivers and all I can muster is 1.24.5xx, havent the faintest where I am going wrong :\
I believe I am hitting all the apexes, corners, driving lines correctly....

Checkout DaveySkills on YouTube, he's quick and does some simple lap guides showing his inputs.

Don't get too hung up in laptime in Rookies though. You can pick up podiums starting mid pack and avoiding any carnage. It's all about finishing a clean race and enjoying it than trying to win. You have to remember in the real world you'd likely face the same issue at your current level so don't be so hard in yourself and it's more enjoyable :)

watch some guides on youtube, your probably losing a lot of time in one of the corners because you don't go wide enough and carry as much speed in to the corner or whatever.

also theres throttle techniques you need to master

Dave Cam on Youtube is good to learn the track. He is currently doing the BMW 12.0 series which I am running this season and after watching his learn Laguna video I managed my first win, and at Zandvoort got a 2nd which is my highest finsih at this track.

Cheers folks... took part in a race... got pole... messed up the start....down to 4th... made it back up to 2nd... silly backmarker was lagging and made me crazy down to 3rd which is where I finished.
Some practice managed to get down to 1.24.0xx
Cant get into 1.23, one guy managed a 1.23.3xx.... just how.....

Don't worry about other people's laptimes, just make sure you can lap/race clean and go for it. When you get out of rookies, you start seeing the aliens(they are so fast they can't be human), their laptimes are unattainable for 99% of people.

Is everyone on this with a proper rig? Am I going to really struggle with a single monitor on the desk and a cheap g29 or similar?
That will be fine, I just had a wheel stand pro and a single monitor for a long time and did reasonably well. One thing is you will really have to pay attention to is your spotter or you end up side swiping cars you simply can't see.
