iRacing

Has it been mentioned recently that the Radical is ******* awesome? If not it should've been :p

So I decided it's been way too long since I raced in an official race so this season I'm aiming to do the Radical season, did a few laps practice earlier in the week, then some this morning, then jumped into a race this afternoon and just finished the third race in a row...

First race - getting through a grid start for the first time in ages was an experience, did ok though, right up until about half way around lap 3 when I clipped the kerb in the left hander before Moss (Mosport this week) and wrecked the car, 8 minutes repairs then just lapped ~1.5s off the pace.

Second race - some proper fast people, ranked 8th, finished 8th, good race, 0 inc \o/

Third race - much lower SOF, Started 8th, Ranked 2nd, won by 6 seconds, and 0 inc again to boot. w00t :p Love this car.

I have just had the worst race I have experienced by far, I get that new players will be slow and make mistakes but it doesn't excuse **** poor racing. I got hit off the track twice, which I ended up getting 16x for some reason but also lapped cars kept holding the leaders up and taking them out numerous times. I have the replay, which I might upload as it actually quite funny watching it now but was ridiculously annoying at the time.

There will always be bad races, especially so at Rookie level, just take what you can from the race (are there any incidents, your fault or not, that you could've done <something> to avoid?) and move on :)

16x will be 4 seperate 4x's most likely, presumably 2 from being hit off track but there's no way 2 incidents will cause >4x (there's a timelimit from receiving the first incident where further ones only count if they're higher, if that makes sense?)

I did go off the track twice and there was more contact with somebody else but it's annoying as it looks like you have caused all chaos when you get that many Xs. I missed out on the chance to win my first race, I was right behind the leader with 4 laps to go and was 0.5 seconds a lap faster when I spun off. Frustrating but part of the learning process, after one week I have really enjoyed myself though. I'm bit apprehensive about the change of track Tuesday in the Mx5 cup as I feel as though I'm just starting to get consistent fast lap times around Lime Rock.

Having a lot of fun in the Mustang (road) in the past few months. It's been a challenge getting that ole brick around the track sometimes but the racing has been great!

I did a few races in it a few seasons back. Found the racing and community brilliant. Car isn't really my thing but yer had a some great fun over there recommend it to anyone whos starting out, or after a decent lower class full season on a series.

Nice community which shares advice and setups. (thumbs up from me)

I was racing in the second split it seems so didn't watch it, crazy Q times though.

My race was a bit meh, 13th on the grid and ranked 8th, was sure there would be a t1 wreck so started from the pitlane but the gits were clean, ended up 21st and ~10 seconds down, few laps in with some crashes and good laps I was running in ~12th iirc, side by side into the corner at the end of the back straight, still side by side into the 2nd to last corner and I drift wide into the guy, slight contact, I go off and tap the wall, then need to pit for repairs (although car was fine, just a bit slower).

2.5 minutes repairs, came out in 15th iirc, up to 10th due to other people crashing out, ok-ish result but a bit of a poor race :p

I loaded up my Mosport and Radical to see what times I had and 14.6 was my pb but saying that it was from a while ago and I hardly ever drive it but the top 3 guys in the race had 11.8s qual time and were doing mid 12s in race which is mighty.

Yeah, crazy fast, I'm a bit slower now than my PB, split times say a 13.1 is my best lap, so far this week I'm down to a 13.371 Q time, done quite a few 13.4's in the races. Did manage one 12.9 but that was with a perfect tow down the back straight...

I was disappointed that I couldn't get my first win while the Mx5 cup was still at Summit Point, as I'm starting to really get the feel of the track. I can consistently lap at fast pace (for a rookie) but I still have one mistake a race which has cost me a win twice. Overall I have enjoyed my first week of Iracing and will definitely keep playing.

Third race in a row where my safety rating has gone down as some retard has immediately started reversing after spinning, on a positive not however, I won mt first race yesterday :)

Soooo, thread revival time :p, how was everyone's weekend racing?

Back in the Radical after a week off last weekend, was interesting at Interlagos, uber slippery and also a track I've not properly raced at before (did a few laps when it was released in the McLaren), but got there in the end and had some good races.

No wins :( but 2 second places isn't too bad, should've won one but managed to spin 5 times (one 'helped') so 2nd is pretty damn good after that. Gonna race this evening a few times as well to finish off the week, then Spa next week where my PC is going to suffer again, really should buy an upgrade :p

Actually played pCARS yesterday since they've added the MP4 GTR3.

Surprised by how much the game had improved. I hadn't played it for a few months, so it was an enjoyable hour or two.

Definitely need a separate sim rig, so I don't go through cycles of having my wheel setup and not for long periods of time.

I got promoted to a D License yesterday :) The really annoying thing when first starting out is learning the completely new tracks but in the MX5 cup it's Laguna Seca next which I have raced before. I have also got my safety rating up to 3.5 which was a real struggle as there are some real "green" rookies racing the MX5 which makes it difficult, also what's with people ignoring the blue flags, it really annoys me!!!

I don't think the blue flag with the yellow cross has the same meaning in iRacing as the blue flag in a real race. Plus if the rookies are as green as you say then they might not even notice the flag anyway. You have to bear in mind that iRacing is hard and requires high levels of concentration just to keep the car on the track.

I was thinking (again) about a proper sim rig yesterday, realised that I haven't played a game other than sim racing in ages, and since I now work from home I have the works laptop with me at all times for any other usage so why not :p

And yeah, blue flags are information only, which is actually the case for a large amount of real racing as well, F1 and others aren't the norm I believe. (certainly for uk motorbike club racing the blue flag is informational only, but that's the only one I have first hand experience of)

EDIT: In addition to that there are some really bad behaviour with the blue flag from quite a few drivers it seems, what I would like everyone to do is to simply continue driving until I pull out to pass and then not fight, lets face it as the leader you are, or should be, so much faster that it doesn't take more than a couple of turns to get the run on them that you need. But some people either fight which is retarded, or dive out of the way at the stupidest moments that's more dangerous than if they fought for the 'position'...

I'd also add that if you have a mic then use it. Tell the driver in front you're not racing him and he's a lap down and tell where you want to pass. Equally use your mix the other way and tell faster drivers where you want them to pass you.

I looked and it seems you are correct, the blue flag is for "informative" purposes only. This still doesn't excuse people being a lap down fighting you for position, fair enough if the are faster but when they are a couple of seconds slower, they should have the common decency to move over.

No it doesn't excuse it, some people are just retards, others may 'simply' not use F3 and not know you're a lap ahead.

Either way if you know it's informational only you can approach it a bit differently, if they don't jump out of your way then assess the situation, if you're miles ahead of the guy behind then pressure the guy (most will crack easily enough) and/or setup a strong overtake rather than just chucking your nose in and expecting them to let you go.

On the other hand if you're in a close battle then you take the risks and hope for the best.

Also worth noting that if you're a couple of seconds a lap faster than the other guy then not only should it be fairly easy to pass safely, but also you need to account (whether he's being an idiot and racing you or not) for the fact that you can run lines and speeds that he possibly can't safely, so try not to put them in a dodgy situation as they're more likely to hit you trying to stay close to on-line than being able to take the corner way off line.
